Sri Lanka Cricket censures Malinga
March 09, 2013 16:43 IST

Speedster Lasith Malinga [ Images ] has been warned by Sri Lanka [ Images ] Cricket to maintain better relations with the media following his spat with journalists.

The SLC, CEO Ajith Jayasekera in a report had recommended Malinga to be censured and advised on his behaviour when dealing with the press in future, a SLC release said.

The SLC executive committee has appointed a 3-member committee to advise Malinga on his behaviour.

The slinger Malinga was rough with the media last Monday at the cricket headquarters when he arrived to resolve the contract signing row involving national cricketers.

Malinga's behaviour was condemned by the local media with public opinion mounting on the SLC to discipline him.

Maiden tons give Sri Lanka huge lead over Bangladesh
March 09, 2013 17:12 IST

Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal scored maiden Test hundreds as Sri Lanka [ Images ] took a strong grip of the first Test against Bangladesh on the second day.

Thirimanne made 155 not out and Chandimal was unbeaten on 116 as they recorded a fifth wicket stand of 203 to take Sri Lanka to a first innings total of 570 for four declared at tea on Saturday.

Buoyed by the batsman, Sri Lanka's bowlers made an early breakthrough to leave Bangladesh on 35-1 at the interval at the Galle International Stadium.

Jahurul Islam (20) was the man out as he tried to get out of the way of a delivery from Shaminda Eranga but only succeeded in gloving a catch to Chandimal.

Anamul Haque (3) and Mohammad Ashraful [ Images ] (0) were at the crease at the break.

Earlier, Chandimal brought up his first test hundred off 136 balls with the aid of 11 fours and two sixes. The 23-year-old making the most of his luck after the tourists had twice dropped him earlier in the innings.

Thirimanne, whose previous highest score was 91 against Australia [ Images ] at Sydney [ Images ] early this year, completed his maiden Test century in the morning session.

Having earlier missed out on a Test hundred, Thirimanne was patient as he carefully picked through 66 balls to score the required 26 runs he needed having started the day on 74 not out. The left-hander struck nine fours in his 193-ball innings for his century.

Thirimanne moved to his highest first-class score after lunch when he completed 150 off 247 balls with 14 fours before the hosts opted to declare.

Bangladesh's only success with the ball came in the fourth over of the day when Angelo Mathews [ Images ] was dismissed for 27.

The Sri Lankan captain tried to manufacture a shot that was not there and chipped a leading edge which the bowler Abul Hasan gladly accepted.

Deodhar Trophy: Unmukt drafted in North Zone team
March 09, 2013 17:32 IST

Unmukt Chand has been drafted in as the 16th member of the North Zone side for the Deodhar Trophy inter-zonal limited overs tournament.

The U-19 World Cup winning captain wasn't a part of the original 15-member squad led by Gautam Gambhir [ Images ] but his match-winning century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final prompted the selectors to draft him as an additional member of the side.

Meanwhile, the North Zone team today left for Guwahati on Saturday and the two senior-most players Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh [ Images ] are expected to join the team on Sunday.

North will take on Suresh Raina-led Central Zone in the first semi-final on Monday.

PCB denies reports of bust-up between Misbah, Hafeez in SA
March 09, 2013 12:57 IST

A series of reports about serious differences between Pakistani captain Misbah-ul-Haq and senior player Muhammad Hafeez in South Africa [ Images ] has prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board to issue a strong denial.

Reports in some sections of the media have suggested that Misbah and Hafeez were involved in an argument during the One-day practice match that Pakistan played at Kimberly this week.

The bust-up apparently was the result of simmering differences between the two over selection issues.

Reports claimed that since Misbah will be captaining the team in the forthcoming ODI series, he has made it clear that Hafeez will have to bat one down and that he wants both senior all-rounders Shoaib Malik [ Images ] and Shahid Afridi [ Images ] in the side.

Hafeez, on the other hand, wanted to open in the ODI series and wants to play three to four pacers.

The reports said that the differences between Misbah and Hafeez who belong to Faisalabad erupted at Kimberly in the dressing room and other players had to intervene to stop the argument from getting out of hand.

Not surprisingly, there were also other stories about problems within the team after the whitewash the team suffered in the Test series in South Africa.

But in an unusual step, the PCB said in a clarification that there was no truth in the reports about the fight between Misbah and Hafeez.

"Taking cognizance of media reports on few media outlets that there was supposedly a disagreement amongst the think tank of Team Pakistan, in particular between skipper Misbah-ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez [ Images ], with regards to the selection of the ODI XI, the PCB highups launched a thorough inquiry. The team management was contacted in South Africa and it was discovered that no such disagreement whatsoever existed amongst the think tank, or between Misbah and Hafeez," PCB said in a statement.

"It is therefore stated for record that all such isolated reports in the media are baseless and inspired. And an attempt to demoralize the team," the statement said.

"In fact, the management was exceptionally satisfied that at the commencement of the One-day International part of the rubber on March 10, the entire Team Pakistan was united and motivated and its morale was very high," it said.

Pakistan team manager Naved Cheema also rubbished reports about differences between Misbah and Hafeez.

"There are no such problems and no such incident took place. The boys are close to each other and are in high spirits for the ODI series. It is true we didn't perform up to expectations in the Test series but that is now past and we are thinking about the present and future," Cheema said on Geo Super channel.

Rahane still waiting to clear the Test
Last updated on: March 11, 2013 20:00 IST

Despite being named in India's squad way back in November 2011, Ajinkya Rahane is still to play a Test. Harish Kotian is as clueless as him why he hasn't made his debut yet.

It seems a never ending wait for Ajinkya Rahane.

The 24-year-old Mumbai batsman realized a long-cherished dream when he was named in India's Test team. However, that joy of being selected was only brief, as despite making it to the Test squad way back in November 2011, for the three-Test series against the West Indies at home, he hasn't featured in a single game during those last 15 months.

After the West Indies series, he was benched for the four-match series in Australia and two Tests at home against New Zealand in August last year. Even in the England series, which India lost 1-2 at home, he never got a look in.

And the trend continued in the first two matches of the ongoing series against Australia which India won convincingly.

So, in sum, he watched 15 Tests go by while sitting in the dressing room or carrying the drinks out.

Bangladesh and skipper Mushfiqur set Test records
Last updated on: March 11, 2013 20:05 IST

Bangladesh amassed their highest total and captain Mushfiqur Rahim chalked up their first Test double century on the fourth day of the opening game against Sri Lanka [ Images ] on Monday.

Resuming on 438 for four, Bangladesh went on to make 638 all out by tea, a first-innings lead of 68.

Sri Lanka then reached the close on 116 for one, with Tillakaratne Dilshan [ Images ] unbeaten on 63 on a lifeless pitch where bat has dominated ball from the start.

It was the second half-century of the match for Dilshan, who was accompanied back to the pavilion by Kumar Sangakkara [ Images ] (49 not out).

The only wicket to fall was that of opener Dimuth Karunaratne for three after he top-edged a hook off Shahadat Hossain to Abul Hasan at fine leg.

With one day left, the game seems destined to end in a tame draw.

Mushfiqur, on 198 at lunch, picked up two singles after the resumption and celebrated his double hundred by punching the air and kissing the turf.

The diminutive 24-year-old batsman was immediately out for 200, trapped lbw by Nuwan Kulasekera off the next delivery.

Mushfiqur's gritty 321-ball knock lasted 438 minutes and included 22 fours and a six.

After Mohammad Ashraful [ Images ] (190) had added one run to his overnight score, Nasir Hossain (100) joined in the run feast and became the sixth centurion in the match.

Nasir's maiden Test hundred came off 151 balls and contained nine fours.

He and Mushfiqur added 106 runs for the sixth wicket before Dilshan had Nasir caught by Sangakkara.

The total by Bangladesh, ninth and last in the Test world rankings, eclipsed the 556 they compiled against West Indies [ Images ] in Dhaka in November.

The second and final Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Colombo starts on Saturday.

Australia crumble against spin after fine start
Last updated on: March 15, 2013 17:30 IST

India [ Images ] claimed four wickets in the final session to end the second day in the third Test against Australia [ Images ] on a high, in Mohali, on Friday.

The Aussies failed to capitalise on a century partnership for the opening wicket and were reduced to 273 for 7 at stumps, with comeback man Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc batting on 58 and 20 respectively.

While Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] emerged India’s surprise package, claiming three wickets, including two off two deliveries, it was Ishant Sharma's [ Images ] late burst that pushed Australia on the backfoot after Ed Cowan and David Warner put up a 139-run partnership for the first wicket after Michael Clarke [ Images ] opted to bat.

His flagging career on the line after a string of failures, Cowan silenced his doubters with a dogged 86, off 238 balls. His partner, Warner scored a fluent 71 off 147 balls, with help of nine fours.

Cowan found the fence eight times, but will be disappointed at not being able to convert his efforts into a century, despite getting two lives.

The duo's efforts, though, were a bit undone with the loss of seven wickets in the final two sessions of play.

Ishant had Brad Haddin [ Images ] and Moises Henriques bowled to reduce Australia to 244 for 6 late into the final session of play at the Punjab [ Images ] Cricket Association stadium, where the first day was washed out due to heavy rain.

Jadeja had Peter Siddle [ Images ] trapped in front of the wicket.

Making a comeback after more than two years in the wilderness, Smith stood firm and showed the right mix of aggression and resolve against the Indian spinners.

After Cowan departed, caught by Virat Kohli [ Images ] off Ravichandran Ashwin at first slip, it was left to Smith to ensure that Australia carry on the fight in this must-win game for them.

Smith, the 23-year-old from New South Wales, did his job admirably, adding crucial runs with Brad Haddin for the fifth wicket, which frustrated the Indians for a while before Sharma opened the floodgates.

In the second session, Jadeja got the wickets of Warner and Clarke for naught, while Pragyan Ojha [ Images ] accounted for Phillip Hughes, as Australia went for tea on 180 for three.

The Cowan-Warner stand, incidentally, is also Australia's best partnership for the opening wicket on this ground, eclipsing the 87-run stand set by Shane Watson [ Images ] and Simon Katich [ Images ] back in 2010.

After having Warner caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni [ Images ], who ran forward after the ball looped off the batsman's bat-pad, Jadeja bagged the most important wicket of skipper Clarke, who was stumped by Dhoni off the first ball the batsman faced.

The ball turned away sharply on landing, and an over-confident Clarke made the mistake of stepping out straightaway.

Twelve overs later, Ojha had Hughes caught down the leg-side by Dhoni, ending the out-of-form batsman's yet another miserable stay at the crease.

Hughes has scored no more than a mere two runs off 70 balls against the spinners while getting out five times in this series.

India could have added one more to the wickets tally, but Virat Kohli at first slip dropped an edge that Ojha induced off Cowan.

Warner struck nine fours while facing 147 balls. What was also important was that the opener spent 206 minutes in the middle after a run of poor scores.

It turned out to be good session for Jadeja, who delivered after the specialist bowlers failed to give the hosts a breakthrough.

Earlier, it turned out to be Shikhar Dhawan [ Images ]’s greatest moment of his cricket career as the 27-year-old left-hander from Delhi [ Images ] was handed his maiden Test cap by none other than the great Sachin Tendulkar [ Images ].

India made two changes to the squad, bringing in Ojha and in place of Harbhajan Singh [ Images ] and Dhawan for the dropped Virender Sehwag [ Images ].

Australia brought in Brad Haddin, Mitchell Starc, Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon in place of the injured Matthew Wade and suspended James Pattinson, Shane Watson and Glenn Maxwell.

Australia failed to capitalise on a century partnership for the opening wicket and were reduced to 273 for 7 at stumps on Day 2 of the third Test against India, in Mohali, on Friday.

Comeback man Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc were unbeaten on 58 and 20 respectively at the end of the day's play.

- Match Report

Ravindra Jadeja was the man responsible for checking Australia's march after a solid opening partnership between Ed Cowan and David Warner, claiming three wickets for 56 runs.

The Test finally commenced after rain clouds cleared up and Australia captain Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to bat.

Rain washed out the first day's play.

The pitch is expected to help the spinners, as plenty of cracks are visible on the surface.

India made two changes to the team, bringing in left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha for Harbhajan Singh, while Shikhar Dhawan replaced Virender Sehwag.

Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar tried a bit extra in the beginning but struggled with his line and length.

Australia's openers Ed Cowan and David Warner batted sensibly. Warner collected the runs while Cowan was watchful.

The opening pair held fort bravely to keep the Indian bowlers at bay in the first sesion.
