Chris Gayle to play T20s in Zimbabwe

2CnKC.jpg

Johannesburg: Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle, involved in a protracted dispute with his national board, will play in Zimbabwe's domestic T20 competition at the end of November, officials said on Monday.

Gayle, 31, has not played for West Indies since a World Cup quarter-final in March and the board (WICB) issued a statement last month saying the batsman would be considered for West Indies selection again only if he retracted statements about the board and their officials.

Gayle will play for the Matabeleland Tuskers in the T20 tournament from November 25 to December 4.

"I am a cricketer and I want to play," Gayle said in a statement. "I would rather be playing for the West Indies but while that's not possible I want to use my time wisely, entertain some people and try to do some good."

After 100th ton, Sachin to donate bat to Eden Gardens

n5vKN.jpg

Batting genius Sachin Tendulkar has promised to donate the bat with which he scores his 100th international century to the proposed cricket museum at the Eden Gardens, a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official claimed Thursday. "Sachin has told us that he would donate the bat with
which he scores his 100th international hundred to the cricket museum," CAB joint secretary Biswarup Dey told mediapersons here.

Tendulkar also donated his gloves and a national team jersey after the Mahendra Singh Dhoni led side defeated the West Indies at the Eden Gardens Thursday to record India's 75th Test win on home soil.

Dhoni also gifted the CAB the bat with which he struck a hundred in the second Test that ended here in a thumping innings and 15 run win for India.

Keeping in mind the milestone of the 75th win, the CAB had requested the Indian team to donate some memorabilia like their cricketing gear.

The equipment will be displayed in the "India's 75th Test win at Home" section of the museum.

Zaheer's availability for Australia tour subject to fitness

HE9em.jpg

MUMBAI:
Harbhajan Singh has been left out of the squad for the four-Test tour of Australia, with the national selection committee sticking to the new spin duo of R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.

India will play the first Test at Melbourne from Dec 26. Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who was a member of the Test squad against West Indies, makes way for medium-pacer Praveen Kumar.

Pace ace Zaheer Khan, nursing hamstring and ankle injuries, was named in the 17-member side but will join the team subject to match fitness.

He will be playing for Mumbai in the forthcoming Ranji Trophy tie against Orissa from Nov 29. "Zaheer will play a couple of Ranji Trophy matches and once he is fully match-fit he will join the side," Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the chairman of selectors, said.

"He may also go with the team as by then he would have played a couple of matches." Explaining Harbhajan's exclusion, Srikkanth said, "Unfortunately, we cannot help it as the team selects itself. Also, in Australia, you cannot have more than two spinners. Pragyan Ojha and Ashwin are doing an excellent job. Sometimes it becomes bad luck and sometimes people miss out. I'm sure everyone has their own time and space to come back."

Harbhajan has been left out in the cold following his poor show in England, where he took just two wickets in two Tests and had to return home due an abdominal muscle injury.

Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis resolve dispute after a chat

QG1os.jpg

Karachi: Shahid Afridi's dispute with former coach Waqar Younis which cost him the captaincy of Pakistan team has been resolved after the two met up during the recent series against Sri Lanka in the UAE.

Waqar confirmed that he met Afridi during the one-day series against Sri Lanka in Dubai and had a discussion on the differences between them.

The dispute between the two erupted after the Pakistan team's tour to the West Indies this year.

Afridi, who was captain of the one-day side, on returning home lambasted Waqar for interfering in his domain and making his job more difficult.

Later it was confirmed that the differences between the two had led to Afridi walking out twice from team meetings during the ODI series in the Caribbean.

Afridi's comments led to him being stripped as captain of the limited-over side and his subsequent announcement of retirement in protest.

Ishant has some technical issues, says Ian Bishop

3CG5W.jpg

MUMBAI: Wankhede witnessed a humdinger that will go down in record books as one of the closest Test matches ever played. West Indies played smartly to deny India a 3-0 clean sweep on the final day of the third Test.

TOI caught up with former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop for a ringside view of the thrilling final day's play. Excerpts...

How would you sum up the final day?

It was an enthralling last day's play. The pitch came to life unexpectedly but West Indies continued to show problems in their batting. Three times in this series the batting collapsed. So, that has been an ongoing problem. They will be happy with the performance of the bowlers and happier, perhaps, not to lose the Test match. But they have to cope with the inexperience in the batting.

Do you feel Shivnarine Chanderpaul could have made a difference in this game?

That was possible in theory. Someone like Chanderpaul is always going to be an asset to any side. This was a sort of pitch that he would have enjoyed batting on. But West Indies batted well in the first innings without Chanderpaul. And they have to continue doing it on both innings of a Test match. There are still some technical issues with one or two players. The way the wickets fell today was disappointing.

Darren Bravo has been phenomenal in this series cracking two hundreds. Your thoughts on his matured batting...

He's an exceptional player in this West Indies team. He has an analytical mind, has a range of strokes and he has the focus to do well. He wants to leave a legacy of being a great player and I have no doubt that Darren will shape into a great West Indian batsman.

Do you feel this young team has it in them to carry the great West Indian legacy?

I think they understand the legacy that is left by the Marshalls, the Lloyds, the Greenidges... They are a young team and they have to respect that and create their own legacy. They have to do things in a fashion that suits their talent. You won't have four great fast bowlers again. So, whatever attack they have, they got to work on that. Kraigg Brathwaite, for example, occupies the crease and he can't be a Greenidge. So, he has to play in his own fashion. Darren Bravo talks about looking up to Lara, but he doesn't pattern himself on Lara. So, he's trying to form his own legacy and I am sure the comparisons will stop coming after a point and Bravo won't be seen as Brian Lara.

Ojha breaks into top-15

DHKbA.jpg

India spinner Pragyan Ojha on Sunday broke into the top-15 of the ICC cricket rankings for the first time in his career following a strong show against the West Indies in the third Test, in which he took seven wickets. Six of his seven wickets came in West Indies' second innings and he jumped 11 places to 15th, just ahead of Australia's Peter Siddle.

However, India paceman Ishant Sharma slipped three places to 20th after taking just one wicket in the match. Out of action pacer Zaheer Khan remained at number six.

Meanwhile, India continued to be second in the team rankings, but closed the gap on England at the top of the table to seven points. India gained one ratings point for the 2-0 series win and moves to 118 ratings points.

In the ranking for Test batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar (6), Rahul Dravid (8), and V.V.S. Laxman (14) lost a place each, while Virender Sehwag is unchanged at 19.

Shah Rukh confident of good showing by KKR in next season

ZCZcs.jpg

Kolkata Knight Riders might not have been able to get desired results in the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far, but its co-owner Shah Rukh Khan feels that the team is talented enough to make a strong comeback in the forthcoming season.

"The boys have been doing well. We are making
consistent improvement in our game and with a couple of months break ahead of the tournament, if the team remains injury free, we hope of having a good training session leading into the tournament," said Shah Rukh.

The Bollywood star, who was in the city to flag-off the Airtel Delhi Half-Marathon, admitted that the attitude of country towards the sport was changing but insisted that the nation needs to develop a sports culture.

"First it was roti, kapda, makan, then there was a surge in the entertainment and in the coming years you will see people laying more emphasis on sports. I think all of us should come forward to sponsor sports, not only cricket but the other sports like shooting, hockey," said Shah Rukh.

Bipasha Basu, who was also present on the occasion, said the event provided a great opportunity for people across different sections of the society to come together and run for a cause.

"You will definitely see an increase in such events in the future. It provides an opportunity for the people across different segments to come together. It also helps in bringing people from two cultures together, which is really a great thing," said Basu.

Meanwhile, actor Rahul Bose, who ran the entire race, said it was an amazing feeling to run in front of the historic India Gate.

Gul Panag, another star from the Bollywood, said the "high" she gets from running cannot be matched by any other substance.
