The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay seeking playing of national anthem in all courts before the beginning of the proceedings.

A bench of justices comprising of Amitava Roy and Dipak Misra said that it is not inclined towards entertaining the plea of the BJP leader post Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the petitioner is required to file a proper application first.

"Whether right or wrong, our order should not be overstretched. Bar (referring to Upadhyay) should show some retrain," the bench said.

Earlier on Friday, the BJP leader submitted the plea before the bench which had a few days ago made it compulsory for all the cinema halls to play national anthem before the beginning of a movie.

Along with this, the bench had also said that the people present in the hall must stand and exhibit respect.

In its November 30 order, the apex court had said that "love and respect for the motherland is reflected when one shows respect to the national anthem as well as to the national flag. That apart, it would instill the feeling within one a sense committed patriotism and nationalism."
