Sangakkara doubtful for first Test

Kumar Sangakkara is a doubt for the opening Test against South Africa after splitting the webbing on his right hand during the warm-up match against an Invitational XI in Benoni. His concerns added to Sri Lanka's problems as they ended the rain-hit three-day match in a more wounded state than when they began having also watched Nuwan Pradeep tear his right hamstring.

Pradeep suffered his injury after bowling ten deliveries on the second day and, while he was not immediately ruled out of the tour, it seems likely he'll soon fly home . Sri Lanka were already without four injured quicks who didn't make the original squad. Sangakkara, meanwhile, faces a tight timeframe to be ready for the first Test at Centurion on Thursday after tearing webbing between the first and second fingers on his right hand while fielding at point and did not bat on the final day.

Sri Lanka to replace injured Pradeep

Sri Lanka's fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep has been ruled out of the ongoing tour of South Africa after tearing his right hamstring, Sri Lanka Cricket said on Monday.

Pradeep, 25, suffered the injury while bowling during the warm-up game against the South Africa Invitation XI in Benoni on Saturday.

“Physio Stephen Mount is of the view that Nuwan will be unable to play for another three to four weeks,” the governing body said in a statement. “The team management has requested for a replacement player.”

The selectors have yet to name his replacement.

Meanwhile, former skipper and frontline batsman Kumar Sangakkara is expected to be fit for the first Test starting in Centurion on Thursday, the statement added.

The left-hander suffered a tear in his right hand while fielding in the same match.

“Doctors feel the injury will heal, enabling him to play in the first Test,” the cricket board said.

Sri Lanka is due to play three Tests and five one-day internationals during the tour which ends on January 22.

Sri Lanka is looking for its first Test win since defeating India in world bowling record-holder Muttiah Muralitharan's last Test in Galle in July 2010.

Since then it has played 14 Tests, lost four and drawn 10.

We will hit the bat high - Steyn

9brgS.jpg

South Africa's fast bowlers will aim to make things awkward for Sri Lanka's batsmen by hitting the bat higher than the visitors are used to, Dale Steyn, South Africa's spearhead, has said. Steyn said he hoped to exploit the South African pitches, known for their pace and bounce, as much as possible against a side who have not toured the country for nine years.

"In the subcontinent, where these guys grow up, the ball hits the bat from the stickers down," Steyn said. "We want to hit the bat on areas that are unfamiliar for them and make them feel uncomfortable, like maybe a little higher up."

With the threat of balls buzzing around their ears or having to be fended off at chest height, Sri Lanka would have liked to get more batting time during their warm-up match against the South African Invitation XI from December 9-11. The first day was washed out after downpours in Benoni and the Invitation XI opted to bat on the second, leaving the Sri Lankans with less than two sessions of batting time on the third day. Openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana both enjoyed fruitful innings but the rest of the line-up are without significant game time on South African pitches.

South Africa-Sri Lanka first Test from today

South Africa will seek to end a sequence of disappointing results in home series when it takes on Sri Lanka in the first of three Tests at SuperSport Park on Thursday.

South Africa has lost one and shared three of four most recent home series. Sri Lanka, though, should not provide too stiff a challenge for the home side. The large number of drawn games is an indication that Sri Lanka's batting is stronger than its bowling.

Much would appear to depend on the form of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who have been Sri Lanka's leading batsmen for the past decade. South African Dale Steyn refused to go as far as to say it was “payback time” for the bowlers, including himself, who had struggled in Colombo five years ago, but he said they had made a close study of the Sri Lankan batsmen.

“The teams: South Africa (likely XI): Graeme Smith (capt.), A.B. de Villiers (vice-capt.), Jacques Rudolph, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher (wk), Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir

Sri Lanka (from):
Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt.), Angelo Mathews (vice-capt.), Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal, Kaushal Silva (wkt), Lahiru Thirimanne, Dimuth Karunaratne, Chanaka Welegedara, Dilhara Fernando, Thisara Perera, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath and Thilan Samaraweera.
