Proteas played well today. They are pretty much ahead now. 180 overs still remaining and that can be dangerous.
I think they should bat for at least till lunch tomorrow. And post target of 500+ to be on safe side.

Key stats from day three of the Perth Test:

1 Previous score of fifty or above for Duminy in the second innings of a Test before his 141 today. He scored unbeaten 50 on his debut at the same venue nearly eight years ago.

250 -run stand between Elgar and Duminy is:

-The second-highest partnership for any wicket for South Africa against Australia after 341 by Eddie Barlow & Graeme Pollock in Adelaide in 1964

-The second-highest partnership for the third wicket in Perth after 265 by Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor last season

-The fifth-highest stand for the third wicket in matches in Australia for a visiting team

-The eighth-highest stand for the third wicket for South Africa in all Tests and sixth-highest away from home

141 by Duminy is his second highest score in Tests after 166 against Australia at the MCG in his second match, eight years ago. It is the fifth highest by a South Africa No. 4 against Australia.

3 Elgar became the third player to bag a pair and score a century at the WACA after Grame Wood and Allan Border. Wood scored 111 against West Indies in 1988 after bagging his pair against New Zealand in 1980. Border had two hundreds in Perth, both against England, before grabbing a pair against West Indies in 1993.

2 Elgar emulated Graham Gooch as the only player to score a hundred after getting dismissed for a pair on debut at the same venue. Gooch was dismissed for a pair on his debut against Australia in Edgbaston in 1975 and he returned to score 154 against New Zealand in 1990.

4 South African players scoring a century and bagging a pair at the same venue. Herschelle Gibbs did it in two venues while Elgar is the only one to do it at an away venue.

127 by Elgar is his highest score in Tests, surpassing the 121 he scored against West Indies at Port Elizabeth in 2014. This is his fifth Test century, second outside home and first against Australia.

24.3 overs by Mitchell Starc is the most by him in an innings before his first wicket. The previous most was 21 overs against Sri Lanka in Hobart in 2012. Also, there is one instance of him bowling more overs and going wicket-less - 25 overs against India in Chennai in 2013.

69 runs scored by Faf du Plessis is the most for a South African player in his maiden Test as captain in Australia. He went past 68 (8* & 60) by Percy Sherwell at the SCG in 1910.

Australia name unchanged squad for Hobart Test

The outcome of the first Test against South Africa at the WACA in Perth will have no bearing on the squad picked for the second Test in Hobart, as Australia will play an unchanged side, head coach, Darren Lehmann confirmed on Sunday (November 6).

Australia, on day four, find themselves on the mat after South Africa batted themselves into pole position. That after, Australia bowled the visitors out for 242 in the first innings but themselves collapsed to being bundled for 244. Australia failed to capitalise on Dale Steyn being ruled out of the series with a shoulder injury and squandered their hold on the game after having been 158 for 0 at one point.

They then collapsed against the pace of Vernon Philander and spinner Keshav Maharaj, before the South African batsmen took their lead above 400 with JP Duminy and Dean Elgar scoring stunning centuries on the third day.

"We spoke about that, probably not playing their natural games at times, especially to the left-arm spinner getting the field back," Lehmann told ABC Radio. "So we probably were a bit too timid at times and not looking to score and rotate the strike. Having said that they did bowl well, and we didn't counter it well enough.

"They do all the prep, they're great young men, they're trying to do as well as they can for Australia each and every time, it's just a case of little mental lapses at times. Collectively we're always pretty positive, but stats will show we haven't batted as well as we would have liked the last few Test matches. There's no hiding the fact we've got to bat better.

"There's always pressure when you're coaching your country or playing for the country, that's why the guys have got to where they've got to. They've been brilliant doing all the work behind the scenes and playing at the level below, now they've got to do it at this level. There's always pressure whether you win or lose, a lot less when you're winning."

An unchanged squad for the Hobart Test, which is scheduled to begin on November 12, would mean retention of players in the squad that have come under immense criticism because of their lack of deliverance. With their spot guaranteed for one other match, they would seek to validate their presence, given the long summer ahead.

Squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Adam Voges, Mitchell Marsh, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle, John Hazelwood, Nathan Lyon, Joe Mennie.
