Mumbai: The Shiv Sena, a long-time ally of the BJP, will go it alone in the 2019 national and assembly polls, its top leaders decided in Mumbai today.

The Sena is the BJP's oldest partner but the two parties have been more like frenemies in the past few years. The Sena and its chief Uddhav Thackeray have been the sharpest critics of the BJP at the centre as well as the state, the latter despite their coalition government.

In the last Maharashtra election, the BJP pulled out of the alliance and emerged as the single largest party. After the polls, however, the two parties came together to form the government, with Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister.

The two parties also contested the elections to the BMC or Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation separately.

The Sena hasn't specified whether it is pulling out of the government in Maharashtra. If that is the case, then the BJP may not be left with enough numbers for a majority. The Sena, sources say, is likely to continue till the 2019 national election with the BJP, but fight the elections alone.
