WASHINGTON: Wikipedia has warned its users that if they see commercial ads on the online encyclopedia, it possibly means their web browser has been infected with a virus.

"We never run ads on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is funded by more than a million donors who give an average donation of less than 30 dollars," Philippe Beaudette, Wikipedia's Director of Community Advocacy, wrote on the site's blog.

"If you're seeing advertisements for a for-profit industry... or anything but a fundraiser, then your web browser has likely been infected with malware," Beaudette added.

According to The New York Daily News, Wikipedia warned its people that crooks use the malware implanted in their browser to inject fake ads onto websites.

The website recommended disabling browser extensions and having the computer looked at by a qualified computer repair center in case the user is sees the fake ads.

Wikipedia Showing Ads? Your PC Is Infected!

.

Thursday, May 17, 2012: Wikipedia has time and again made it clear to its users that it is a well-funded organisation and they never run advertisements on Wikipedia pages. Normally, the top banner of the page displays notifications regarding its fundraising events. However, if you see an advertisement of some profit company, you have reasons to worry. This means that your machine has malware!

It is most likely that the malware has found access to your favourite browser (it could be Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari etc) through installed extensions. There could be another side to it. There is also a probability that your Internet service provider is feeding ads into the Web pages. These extension-induced ads could either be present only on Wikipedia or in every site that you visit. CrazyEngineers report explains it further: For example, the extension called “I want this” installs itself in Google Chrome. To remove it, you may open the options menu via the “pipe-wrench” icon on the top right, and choose Settings. Next, Open the Extensions panel and there is the list of extensions installed. And now remove that Extension by clicking the Remove button next to an item.

This is basically to inform our readers that Wikipedia still doesn’t display ads anywhere. In case, you are viewing them, it’s time to take action.
