WASHINGTON: Wikipedia has warned its users that if they see commercial ads on the online encyclopedia, it possibly means their web browser has been infected with a virus.
"We never run ads on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is funded by more than a million donors who give an average donation of less than 30 dollars," Philippe Beaudette, Wikipedia's Director of Community Advocacy, wrote on the site's blog.
"If you're seeing advertisements for a for-profit industry... or anything but a fundraiser, then your web browser has likely been infected with malware," Beaudette added.
According to The New York Daily News, Wikipedia warned its people that crooks use the malware implanted in their browser to inject fake ads onto websites.
The website recommended disabling browser extensions and having the computer looked at by a qualified computer repair center in case the user is sees the fake ads.
