NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), India's premier anti-terror probe body, has shut its website following reports of security breach . It, however, claimed that the move was aimed at tightening safety mechanism following recent incidents of hacking of government websites like the National Security Guard and the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Sources in the National Informatics Centre (NIC), which maintains government websites, said the NIA's site - nia.gov.in - was shut after the Centre received an urgent message from the agency.
It was learnt that the NIA could notice certain 'unverified' contents on the site, which could be termed as "security breach". Suspecting it a job of hackers, the agency immediately informed the NIC to shut down the website till further notice.
The NIA website on Tuesday read: "The site is under maintenance. Sorry for inconvenience".
Agency officials, however, claimed that the website was taken off from the cyberspace to further tighten the security so that it becomes impregnable for hackers.
"Taking a cue from the hacking incident of CBI and recent attempt to enter into the NSG internal mail, we decided to revisit out security mechanism of the website," said an official.
The home page of the CBI website had a message from the 'Pakistani Cyber Army' warning the Indian 'Cyber Army' not to attack their websites in last December. The hackers had also been able to attack some other vital websites apart from 270 other non-governmental portals, including some media houses, in the past.
