Since a really long time, a smartphone with foldable and bendable display has been speculated to be released from the house of Samsung. To be precise, since Samsung showed off a prototype of a bendable display at CES 2013, every year Samsung fans and industry critics wait to hear an announcement from the company about it. While Samsung well-pleased its customers by releasing an edged display with the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, it continued to better its display quality with the succeeding generation of its phones. The latest Galaxy Note 7 floored reviewers and consumers by cramming a large 5.7-inch display onto a body that’s physically smaller than most 5.5-inch display smartphones, which was achieved by a slightly curved screen and trimming of top and bottom bezels. And now, taking another step towards cutting-edge technology, Samsung makes the hope for foldable smartphone even more stronger.
According to a recent report by South Korea’s
Yonhap News Agency, on September 27, Samsung Display Co, an affiliate of Samsung Electronics Co, registered for a patent at the US Patent and Trademark Office, for technology to develop bendable displays in the US. Samsung registered for a patent is for an ”organic light-emitting diode displays [that] folded and bent inwards.” The news agency also managed to acquire a few sketches of the prototype in the patent application, which can be seen below. The news agency says, “The two firms have so far registered 30 related patents with the USPTO, with 14 of them registered this year alone. The patents have been either registered both at home and abroad or disclosed to the public years ago, suggesting that the tech giant and its affiliate have prepared for the launch of such models.”
One of the two devices folds in half like a makeup compact case, while the other device may unfold from a 5-inch form factor into an 8-inch one, according to the report.
Back in June, Bloomberg had reported that Samsung has been working hard on coding a user interface, which suits a bendable display, indicating that the release of a bendable or foldable smartphone could be in the pipeline. The report also suggested that Samsung “could” possibly release a phone with a bendable display as early as February 2017, which naturally looks highly unlikely now.
Other than working on a smartphone with a flexible display, Samsung this year filed a new
patent revealing company’s plausible plans to develop a 3-in-1 foldable device that could be used as a watch, smartphone and tablet. The concept device had a stretchable OLED screen as well. According to the patent, Samsung is aiming to develop a “device using stretchable display and controlling method of the same.” The patent describes that a stretchable display can be folded in different ways. According to the images in the patent application, the device collapses to a narrow strip, can be worn as a smartwatch. Bending it slightly, it fits to your face, it turns into a smartphone with the top hooked to the ear and the bottom to the mouth. And if the device is further expanded it turns into a tablet.
Earlier this year, Lenovo also surprised everyone by demonstrating a similar 3-in-1 device at the Tech World event. The smartphone that Lenovo showcased in the event could be simply worn on one’s wrist like a bracelet and a tablet that can be folded down the middle and used like a smartphone.
