Over the years TVs have evolved with ultra high resolution and smarter with internet connectivity, and companions like Google Chromecast and Apple TV. Now, Samsung is looking to up the ante with rollable TVs. The company has applied for a patent at the the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for rollable TVs, which can be rolled up like a scroll. While Samsung already has shown a number of flexible devices, mostly prototypes, this is probably the first time Samsung has applied for rollable TVs. Interestingly, Samsung has applied for a slew patents related to flexible displays this year.

Based on the patent application, the TV looks like a scroll, and one needs to roll it from both the ends after which it can be slip within a small case when not in use. “This rollable display device can be used for TVs, monitors, game devices, multimedia devices and so on. “Displays in devices can be Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) displays, Light Emitting Diode (LED) displays and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays,” says patent.

It’s worth pointing out here that the patent applications do not necessarily confirm commercial launch of the product, and may stay as concept on paper for a very long time. That said, Samsung isn’t alone in making flexible/rollable displays. Earlier this year, LG showcased an 18-inch rollable, 1 mm-thick OLED display prototype at CES 2016. The LG TV display rolled-up like a piece of paper. Back in May Samsung has also unveiled a rollable AMOLED display.

Samsung is not just working on rollable TVs. The company has long been rumored to launch a smartphone with bendable display. Previously, we came across a patent that unveiled that Samsung was interested in creating the foldable smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy X. The rumors suggest that this foldable device is scheduled to be released somewhere in 2017. There were rumors that the Korean company was also working on flexible screen technology that will allow the display screens to bend, fold and roll.

The patent reveals that the device under the codename Project Valley can be “folded or unfolded semi-automatically.” The latest patent bears resemblance with Microsoft Surface Book once folded. Samsung’s idea of a flip phone is a bendable section in the middle that will allow the phone to fold and looks like a flip phone.

Furthermore, Samsung’s technology is not restricted to OLED panels only; the company explains that the scrollable display technology works with LCD, LED and OLED displays, which may mean that we can see all sorts of scrollable displays from smartphones to TV’s. All we know is that the company is planning on using technology for displays, smartphones and televisions and talking about it seems that a rollable display is going to become an integral part of Samsung’s TV production.
