Contrary to certain media reports, Reliance Jio’s Welcome Offer is not ending on December 3. When Jio’s 4G services were commercially launched in September it was announced that till December 31, all users will get access to unlimited 4G data quota (with a daily cap of 4GB) along with unlimited voice calls to subscribers under the Welcome Offer. Now, some media reports have claimed that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked Reliance Jio to end the free services on December 3. Reliance Jio has refuted the reports, and given a different picture on the same.
“The Reliance Jio Welcome Offer benefits of unlimited voice and data will be available to all subscribers up to December 31,2016. The offer will be available to new customers for subscription till December 3, 2016. Customers who have not subscribed services till December 3 will be able to subscribe to new offers as well as tariff plans that are available from Jio,” Reliance Jio said in a statement.
This essentially means that if you are an existing Jio customer, you will continue to enjoy the free unlimited voice and data offer available on your number till December 31. The change only affects those who subscribe to Jio services after December 3, 2016. New customers after the said date shifted to new data plans which the company will launch in future.
Confusion about the offers arose when it was reported that following the hue and cry by incumbent operators, TRAI had ordered a cut down on Reliance’s free offer. Reports indicated that Reliance Jio ’s free offer violated the 90-day limitation. As the services were launched commercially on September 5 and announced the free offer to be valid till December 31, other operators asked TRAI to intervene, indicating that as per norms a promotional offer could only run for 90 days which, in Jio’s case, end much earlier than the projected December 31 deadline. Although TRAI had told operators that it did not find the promotional scheme violating any rules, newest reports indicated otherwise. While the regulator rejected claims that Reliance Jio violated interconnection usage charge norms and for adopting a tariff plan that was seen to be anti-competitive and predatory
