After an incredible 12 months of cricket for the PNG Hebou Barramundi's that has seen them rocket to a world ranking of 19, they will finally get the chance to put this form on show to their home fans when the Pepsi ICC East-Asia Pacific Division 1 begins in Port Moresby on Monday.
According to Barramundi's keeper Jack Vare, preparations have been going exceptionally well for the Andy Bichel coached hosts who are determined not to waste an opportunity to perform at their peak on the turf wickets of Amini Park and Colts Cricket Ground.
"Representing your country in front of your family and friends is a great honour," said Vare "It is great to be able to show them the exciting and entertaining brand of cricket the Hebou Barramundi's can play and demonstrating the spirit of PNG through the game of cricket."
"Although there is the added pressure of playing on home soil I know all the players are excited and looking forward to the tournament," he said.
Vare has never played against any of the other four sides at the tournament but is fully aware of the significance of playing other countries from the region and the rivalries that exist.
"PNG and Fiji have certainly had a rivalry dating back a number of years, however, we will take every team as a threat," he said. "The coaching staff has always told us to prepare well mentally and to always be aware of the opposition."
However the PNG side is coming in with no significant injuries and arguably as well prepared as any side has ever been for an East-Asia Pacific event. Given the success of recent times Vare is under no illusions that anything less than a PNG victory would be considered a failure.
Despite this he has full confidence in his teammates ability to get the job done.
"If each person in the Hebou Barramundi's plays their role, I know we will come out on top," he said.
PNG open their campaign against Vanuatu on Monday 4 July at 10:15am local time on Amini Park.
