After defeating the New Zealand by 197 runs in their historic 500th Test at Kanpur, India will take on the visitors in the second Test at Kolkata's Eden Gardens tomorrow, with the top rank at close sight.
Now, after Kanpur's Green Park, it will be the iconic Eden Gardens hosting India's 250th home Test match.
The Indian Test side has always provided the home crowd with many memorable performances in the past which the fans have always cherished. Be it Kumble's ten-wicket haul against Pakistan, Virender Sehwag's epic 319 against Proteas at Chepauk, Rahul Dravid's centuries in both innings of 2005 Kolkata Test against Pakistan, Laxman's magical 281* knock against Aussies, and the list goes on.
So, here are some of the best moments revisited again:
When Ganguly and Co. stunned Aussies in Eden Gardens
In 2001, Steve Waugh-led Aussies started their India tour with an easy ten-wicket victory at Mumbai. Their pursuit for the consecutive 17th Test win started on a positive note at Eden, as they dismissed India for 174, after putting up 445. Soon, the Kolkata crowd witnessed miracle unfolding in front of them. It was 232-4 in the second innings for the home side, when VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid started their marathon 376-run partnership. Laxman scored his personal best 281*, while Dravid played a second fiddle with a patient 180*. India declared at a commanding 657-7, setting up a 384 run target for Waugh's men. Then, Harbhajan Singh, who already claimed seven wickets in the first innings (including a hat-trick), came up with another destructive spell of 73-6 to dismiss Australia for 212 runs. India not only won the match for 171 runs, but also clinched the Test series 2-1 in next match at Chennai.
Sehwag storm which sealed the No. 1 Test spot for India in 2009
The Test match at Mumbai's Brebourne Stadium not only witnessed another destructive innings from the 'Nawab of Nazafgarh', but also secured the ascendancy of Indian Test team for the first time in ICC rankings. After Sri Lanka's first-innings total of 393, India put up 726 runs for the loss of nine wickets. On the process, they scored more than 400 runs by the end of second day, with Sehwag staying undefeated on 284. On the next day, though, he could only add nine runs, his aggressive batting did the Physiological damage for Lankans. But, the 26 run partnership between Amla and eleventh man Morne Morkel took Proteas to 290-9 at the 131st over, with only two overs left for the match. It was Harbhajan Singh, who finally bailed the home side out of the testing times by trapping Morkel LBW for 12. Although India drew the series 1-1, Amla's gritty 123* earned him both the man-of-the-match award and respect from sports-loving Kolkata crowd.

In the first test at Mohali, the Ricky Ponting-led side got a crucial 23 run first innings lead, on a deteriorating wicket. Although India dismissed Aussies for 192 at the second innings, they soon landed at 124-8, with 92 more runs to win. The home side was looking down the barrel, when Laxman, along with Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha, stitched up two match-winning partnerships of 81 and 11 runs. En route to his 73*, Laxman also braved an unbearable back-pain. The most notable moment of India's chase was Ojha escaping both LBW and run-out chances in one Mitchell Johnson delivery, just a few balls before hitting the winning run.
