Pakistan pick Mohammad Amir for Tests in England

Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, has been picked in the squad for the upcoming Test series in England, starting on July 14. Amir will return to the land where he was charged and subsequently banned and jailed for his involvement in spot-fixing along with his then captain Salman Butt and fellow-pacer Mohammad Asif in 2010.

Having served his five-year jail sentence, Amir was drafted into the domestic circuit back home where his notable performances caught the eye of the selectors. The left-arm pacer also featured in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2015 and bowled with admirable pace and precision, enough for the think-tank to fast-track him back to the national side. There was some resistance from within but that was also won over with time as he travelled for the limited-overs series of New Zealand, played a part in the inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League earlier this year before pulling on the Pakistan jersey in the Asia Cup and T20 WC.

Amir's remorseful demeanour since his return has also won administrators of the game over, with Dave Richardson stating that the youngster's return serves as a good lesson for the future. While Amir gears up to fly to England, visa clearance permitting, another left-arm pacer in Junaid Khan will miss out. Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan's chief selector, stated that the 26-year-old will need some time to catch up with his rhythm after having just returned from an injury. Sohail Khan, who made his Test debut in 2009 and last featured in whites in 2011, has found a spot in the side in place of Junaid.

Another major inclusion in the squad is that of leg spinner Yasir Shah , who returns from a provisional suspension for failing a dope test . Yasir's last outing for Pakistan came against England in Sharjah in 2015 where he was the leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps. The failed dope test however, meant he missed the tour of New Zealand and the T20 leg in the first-half of 2016. He is one of the two spinners in the squad.

In the batting department, Pakistan have drafted an extra opener in Sami Aslam as there are concerns over Mohammad Hafeez's fitness.

Mickey Arthur, the recently-appointed head coach of the national side, wasn't present at the pre-tournament camp but Inzamam confirmed that the squad was picked in consultation with the South African. The former Pakistan captain went on to say that a Pakistan A team, led by Babar Azam, will play the tour games in England. There will be room for last-minute changes to the Test squad, for meritorious performances in the warm-up ties.

Sami Aslam, Shaan Masood, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Iftikhar, Zulfiqar Babar, Mohammad Rizwan, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Rahat Ali, Mohammad Amir, Imran Khan, Sohail Khan
