1st Test: Sangakkara keeps Pakistan at bay

ABU DHABI: Kumar Sangakkara put his wealth of experience on show with a pugnacious unbeaten hundred to keep Pakistan's victory bids on hold in the first Test on Friday.

Scorecard

The 33-year-old left-hander notched up 161 for his 26th Test hundred to help Sri Lanka, trailing by 314 runs in the first innings, reach 298/5 in their second knock at close on the fourth day at Abu Dhabi stadium.

They need only 16 runs to make Pakistan bat again, and will look to bat out at least two of the three sessions on the fifth and final day to salvage an unlikely draw.

Sangakkara found an able ally in Prasanna Jayawardene (25 not out) to fight off the second new ball, with which paceman Umar Gul struck with the first delivery to remove Angelo Mathews (22).

Sangakkara-Jayawardene stand for the sixth wicket has so far yielded 65 runs.

Playing his 101st Test, Sangakkara took the fight to the Pakistani bowlers, adding an invaluable 153 runs for the second wickets with opener Lahiru Thirimanne who made a career-best 68.

Walking into bat after Sri Lanka lost opener Tharanga Paranavitana off the very first ball of their second innings on Thursday, Sangakkara batted with resolve as Sri Lanka, resuming at 47/1, reached 125/1 by lunch.

Abu Dhabi: A resilient century (161 not out) by Kumar Sangakkara set up an exciting finish on the last day of the first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Saturday.

The former Lankan skipper kept the Pakistanis at bay throughout the day on Friday and took the team's score to 298-5, trailing Pakistan by just 16 runs at the end of fourth day's play.

Prasanna Jayawardene was with Sanga when the stumps were drawn on Friday.

Sangakkara first strung an important 153-run stand with opener Lahiru Thirimanne who could not make use of the three lifelines given by the Pakistan fielders and was run out on 68.

Angelo Mathews too tried to resurrect Sri Lankan innings before being trapped leg before wicket by Umar Gul.

Gul was pick of the Pakistan bowlers with two wickets, while experienced Saeed Ajmal and young Junaid Khan shared a wicket each.

No leniency for erring players: PCB Chairman

gxnYU.jpg

The new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf has made it clear that he will deal with an iron hand with players who bring bad name to Pakistan with their illegal and unethical behaviour.

“Since I was appointed Chairman of the board on October 11, people have been calling me up from all over the world and urging me to bring in improvement to Pakistan cricket and the board,” he said.

“One thing is clear in my mind. I will not tolerate any groupings or monopoly either in the board or in the national team. There is no question of compromise on this issue.

“Secondly, it is a fact that some cricketers have been responsible for bringing a bad name to Pakistan and Pakistanis all over the world, and I can only tell those players that they will be dealt with an iron hand, and no leniency will be shown to them,” he added.

Pakistan’s image has taken a beating in the last two years because of the involvement of some players in not only spot—fixing but also in unethical practices.

Ashraf, however, ruled out any immediate changes in the board or national team management.

The successful farmer—cum—businessman has been chosen by President Asif Zardari to head the board, and did not give Ijaz Butt an extension after his completion of three—year tenure on October 8.

Pak confident ahead of second SL Test

Dubai: Misbah-ul Haq will look for an improved performance from his fielders to menace Sri Lanka in the second Test which starts at the Dubai sports city stadium from Wednesday.

Pakistan snatched a draw from the jaws of a win by dropping as many as seven catches to let the Sri Lankans off in the first Test in Abu Dhabi last week, leaving the three-Test series tied.

Led by left-arm paceman Junaid Khan (5-38), Pakistan rocked Sri Lanka to a low score of 197 after Misbah won the toss and elected to field and then took a huge 314-run lead on the back of a career-best 236 from Taufiq Umar.

But then the fielders spoiled a good chance of pressing for a win when they dropped six catches on the fourth day, allowing opener Lahiru Thirimanne (68) and Kumar Sangakkara five chances between them.

Sangakkara, who notched 211, then punished Pakistan for their sloppy fielding by putting together a record 201-run stand for the sixth wicket with Prasanna Jayawardene who scored 120 to salvage a draw for Sri Lanka.

Misbah hoped his players will work hard to overcome fielding weaknesses.

"Slip catching is all about confidence, just like batting. We are really looking forward to doing a lot of practice, and forget the fielding effort in the first match and just go out for a win," said Misbah.
