Buoyed by the success of its 'One' smartphone, Chinese tech start-up OnePlus is all set to launch its very own custom ROM, dubbed OxygenOS for the device on February 12, 2015. Clearly, the company has left behind the whole ruckus caused by Micromax-Cyanogen agreement as it looks to provide users of the One its own custom ROM.

If you head over to the OnePlus forum, one of the threads carries an interesting teaser image of a periodic table with the metal Oxygen highlighted in red. While earlier reports suggested that the company might launch a metal variant of the One smartphone soon, it has now turned out to be totally different, a pleasant surprise to say the least.

According to OnePlus, its OxygenOS custom ROM will be "open, customizable, and free of bloat and unnecessary features."

The name OxygenOS was chosen after considering a lot many users' suggestions given on its forum. The company had held a contest for the best name when it had announced that it was looking to launch its own ROM last month.

"We've spent a lot of time thinking about what this ROM means to us and our fans. We realized that, like everything we do, our true goal is to make the product that we ourselves would want to use-to make great technology more accessible for everyone," quotes OnePlus.

So, what's all in store? As things stand, details about the ROM are all but scarce at the moment with the only information doing rounds that OxygenOS will be an optional installation.

Earlier, the company released its first non-Cyanogen software: the first alpha build of Android Lollipop OS for its One smartphone that looks very close to stock AOSP Lollipop.

OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei on Monday revealed CM12S will be released for the OnePlus One smartphone roughly alongside the stable build of OxygenOS in mid-to-late March.

Pei was responding to a user query on Twitter, and announced a March release of both builds apart from apologising for the delay. Pei later confirmed a more precise release date, of mid-to-late March.

The announcement by Pei is a follow-up to the announcement by Cyanogen in late January that the CM12S Lollipop build for the OnePlus One has entered the "QA/QE stage for release." OnePlus earlier this month also revealed some more details about the upcoming stable OxygenOS build for the One smartphone. Also earlier this month, OnePlus and Cyanogen released the CM11S 05Q update, and it was made available over-the-air (OTA) for users globally.
