LUCKNOW: In a bid to create awareness on the issue of gestational diabetes mellitus, public health foundation of India is all set to start certificate programme for physicians, obstetricians and gynecologists so that the problem can be identified well within time. Gestational diabetes is a condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy, especially during their third trimester. It affects upto 15% of pregnant women worldwide.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Manoj Joshi, monitoring and evaluation coordinator for the programme, stated that globally around 366 million people are suffering from diabetes, which is expected to rise to a total of 552 million by 2030. India alone has 62.4 million diabetics and 77.2 million people suffering with prediabetes condition.

Dr Nar Singh Verma head of transfusion medicine department, KGMU and Dr Priti Kumar, a privately practising gynecologist will be imparting training to the enrolled doctors in the four month programme. The two doctors stated gestational diabetes is seen as the precursor to the future diabetes, therefore, limiting it in mothers-to-be can help limit the cases of diabetes but many doctors are unaware of gestational diabetes.
