Mac Office users awaiting a fix for an "important" PowerPoint bug will have to exercise patience because there's no patch date in sight. While Microsoft released the MS11-036 patch for Windows users this Tuesday, the software giant has declined to release a timeframe for Office 2004 and Office 2008 bug fixes.
"Security updates for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac are unavailable at this time," according to the company's MS11-036 security bulletin. "Microsoft will issue updates for these software when testing is complete, to ensure a high degree of quality for their release."
According to the MS11-036 release notes, the vulnerability could allow a hacker to seize control of a victim's computer if he or she opens a malicious PowerPoint file.
Released as part of "Patch Tuesday," MS11-036 closed a pair of "important" vulnerabilities in PowerPoint 2002, 2003, and 2007 on Windows. One of the bugs affects Office for Mac 2004 and Office for Mac 2008; the latest versions of Office—Office 2010 for Windows and Office 2011 for Mac—are not at risk.
This isn't the first time that Microsoft has left Mac Office users hanging. Last November, Microsoft addressed a handful of vulnerabilities in Windows PowerPoint and Mac Office fixes didn't arrive until much later. Office 2008 users waited five weeks and 2004 users didn't receive a patch until last month.
