The most recent announcement from Microsoft around its gaming sphere reveals support for cross-network game-play.

With this new move, Microsoft will enable developers to add cross-network game-play within their games, and players on XBox Live will be able to play with or against those on other networks such as Steam, PlayStation and so on.

However, developers are free to choose the new feature or continue building games to be played within the XBox Live network. “Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players,” Microsoft’s Chris Charla Director of ID@Xbox writes.

This also means that, PC gamers can now play wither their friends who own an XBox. “By opening up cross-platform multiplayer, Microsoft could convince late adopters to buy an Xbox One even though their friends have a PlayStation 4. It’s also a way to make sure that there are enough players for less popular games,” points out Techcrunch.

Microsoft also confirms that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to feature the new capability. It will allow cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

“If developers and console makers get behind Microsoft’s support of cross-network play then it will change the shape of games in the future.

Currently, console gamers are restricted to playing titles on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, and many pick an Xbox One or PS4 based on what their friends purchased,” says TheVerge.

Now, it is to be been if arch-rival Sony will follow a similar path.
