Mhow: A few-second-delay in transmission could result in a sports aficionado missing an exquisite cover drive by his favourite player live, but for the bookies, it means loss in thousands or lakhs. In local areas, bookies are doing everything possible to ensure trouble-free cable transmission during the ongoing IPL matches.
The telecast of matches broadcast through Direct To Home (DTH) services is generally delayed by a ball and hence the local bookies prefer cable services.
Not only they are shelling out extra money to get their favourite channels in Badwah, Mhow and Pithampur, they also supply inverters to the cable operators during the matches. As per a cable TV company source, the big bookies of Indore and Mhow have opened their full-fledged offices in Badwah. One of them had installed a high wattage UPS for the cable operator just before the IPL. This was done to ensure uninterrupted cable transmission at least during the IPL matches.
As per the sources, the bookies pay between Rs 10,000 and 15,000 per month to the cable company in Badwah and Dhamnod to ensure continuity of the sports channels which show the cricket matches of their interest.
A source in the company told TOI that a few technicians were even minting money by disturbing the transmission of a particular sports channel, just ahead of the match hours.
Badwah and Dhamnod have been a safe haven for the bookies. However, when contacted, Dhamnod TI Aishwarya Shashtri and Badwah TI D K Tiwari denied any such activities running in the areas falling under their police station.
