Kolkata, May 27: His legions of fans across the subcontinent undoubtedly consider him a very valuable player, the proverbial jewel in the crown of India's pantheon of veteran cricket stars. But come the Indian Premier League's (IPL) player auction in January this year, Sourav Ganguly was simply brushed aside as all the contesting franchises believed his price tag of $400,000 far outstripped his inherent worth. Indeed the Prince of Kolkata was reduced to a pauper whom nobody wanted.

Then came the rumours that the debuting Kochi team was considering roping him in to their side. But after both parties denied working towards the prospect, Ganguly found himself out in the cold again. Finally, almost as an afterthought, and no less than half way into the season, the beleaguered Pune Warriors India took on Ganguly.

But rather than being accorded prime importance befitting his stature, Dada was still treated much like an outsider and had to wait for two more whole games before eventually figuring in the PWI batting line-up. The pressure on Dada was immense - he had little time to adapt to the demands of the Twenty20 format and prove his worth in the side.

They say it's better to burn out than fade away and Dada would hate to sign off from his job as a cricketer with a whimper. But sadly for him, he might have well reached the end of the road in the IPL in a very inauspicious fashion. In the quartet of games he's played this season, Ganguly has averaged 25 with a below-par strike rate of 84.74. These statistics fall below his overall IPL figures - an average of 27 and a strike rate of 108.64.

It doesn't seem fitting for such a talented and capable cricketer to grab hold of the short end of the stick. After all, one of India's most successful captains has shown time and again that he is true champion at monouevering "the stick" to strike up a good knock. What's the score now, Dada?
