So my friend recently applied for Airtel Black ₹699 (Fiber + DTH). I told him that Airtel is launching IPTV soon so maybe he should wait and see. Today when the technicians visited, my friend asked them about IPTV. The technician immediately replied that they're aware of it and when it's launched, if needed, they can replace the DTH with IPTV without any extra charge.

so when we say IPTV, what does it mean? An app which will consolidate all the channels ( like jiotv app) that wcan be installed on a smart tv too (like jiotv+)? so no need for a separate set top box?
Can someone explain to a lay man what this IPtv service launch means?

I was checking the waves app from Prasar Bharati which has many live channels, is that IPtv too?

IPTV simply means linear live tv over Internet Protocol. But it can be delivered through many ways like app based, hardware based like iptv stb (most broadband provides like excitel, act) and intranet iptv which works with a specific network like BSNL.

Thank you so much.
following up, so irrespective of the distribution channel, [app/stb/specific network] this will still be regulated by TRAI NTO rules? ( Like minimum 153 NCF)

Yes but NCF can be absorbed by iptv providers in your broadband bill. Only channels provided by networks in their ott app won't be regulated by TRAI rules.
