In a bid to give the Kolkata Knight Riders an edge in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League, former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram has rejoined Shah Rukh Khan-owned unit in their preparations Dubai.
One of the first teams to land in UAE for the first leg of the tournament starting April 16, KKR have been bolstered by the return of the 'Sultan of Swing' as bowling consultant for another season. Akram, who was part of the KKR dug-out for three IPL editions from 2010 to 2012, was kicked about the team's chances this time around. Akram, 47, was abuzz on twitter before he hit the training camp with the team.
"About to leave for my first practise session with KKR boys are looking in great shape and mind set," he tweeted.
The 2012 champions KKR play their opener against Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Quikr jumps on the Indian Premier League bandwagon as its principal sponsor
NEW DELHI: Online and mobile classifieds company Quikr has jumped on the Indian Premier League (IPL) bandwagon by signing on as the principal sponsor of the Delhi Daredevils franchise. The partnership will be for a period of three years, according to a press statement released by Delhi Daredevils and Quikr earlier on Saturday.
"Quikr has become a groundbreaking company in the online classified space and we at the Daredevils are truly excited with this partnership. It's a good coming together of brands that share similar values and we do hope this will be the beginning of a long association," said Hemant Dua, chief executive of the Daredevils. Separately, the Twenty20 (T20) franchise, which is owned by infrastructure conglomerate GMR Group, has also brought on board Just Dial, India's largest online business directory, as one of its clothing sponsors.
Mumbai-based Just Dial, which made a successful debut on the Bombay Stock Exchange last year, will see its logo decorating the Daredevils team jersey, along with mobile network operator Idea and ethnic wear chain Manyavar, among others. Horizontal classifieds platform Quikr recently made the news after it raised $90 million (Rs. 540 crore) from a clutch of risk capital investors, a round that was led by Swedish strategic investment giant Kinnevik and existing backer Warburg Pincus. It was the largest non- e-commerce transaction in the country.
The Mumbai-based company, which was founded in 2008, and was originally a part of global technology behemoth eBay, before being spun off, will use the proceeds to expand its operations across the country and towards branding and marketing. "We are excited to partner with the Delhi Daredevils. Much like our business, T20 games are all about succeeding at speed. The idea is to score quikr and win quikr, and we feel we have a great meeting of minds between Quikr and the Daredevils on that," said Pranay Chulet, chief executive of Quikr.
The Indian Premier League is the world's biggest domestic T20 competition. This year's edition - the seventh - is scheduled to kick off on April 16th, and will be played across the Middle East - Sharjah and Dubai, before making its way back to India.
Delhi Daredevils, which is yet to win the IPL, having made the semi-finals twice - was the worst performing team in the 2013 edition, winning only three matches. It, however, elected not to retain any of its players ahead of the 2014 auctions, but bought back talismanic batsman Kevin Pietersen at a cost of $1.5 million to lead a brand new team. Captain Pietersen, his deputy Dinesh Karthik and coach Gary Kirsten were also present for the jersey unveiling session.
Delhi Daredevils unveil new jersey for season seven
New Delhi: The Delhi Daredevils unveiled their brand new jersey for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier league with a tie-up with the country's largest online and mobile classifieds portal classified, Quikr, here on Saturday.
The new jersey was unveiled in the presence of captain Kevin Pietersen, vice-captain Dinesh Karthik and coach Gary Kirsten.
Pranay Chulet, the CEO and founder of Quikr, said this will be a long-standing association with the GMR group, the owners of Delhi Daredevils.
"Although I cannot talk about the details of the contract but we are hopeful that it will be a long-term association with Delhi Daredevils which will prove to be mutually beneficial to both the parties," Chulet said.
Delhi Daredevils CEO Hemant Dua added: "This is an ideal opportunity for us to engage the Daredevils fans via Quikr platform. I believe that just like Quikr's growth in recent years the Daredevils will also grow from strength to strength in the upcoming edition of IPL."
The Delhi Daredevils squad with 23 players left for Dubai this evening. They will play their first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 17 in Sharjah.
Delhi Daredevils skipper Kevin Pietersen suffers injury scare
Delhi Daredevils skipper Kevin Pietersen is reportedly fighting hard to be 100 percent fit, just three days ahead of the Indian Premier League 2014.
Pietersen has already joined the rest of the squad and is training with them at the Palam Air Force ground. With a heavy bandage on the ring and the little fingers of his right hand, the sacked England batsman has not indulged in full-fledged batting in nets.
The Times of India quoted a Delhi Daredevils source as saying, "KP has a fractured finger. That is why he isn't taking an active part in the drills. A well-known doctor has been called to attend on him but he will only meet him in the UAE. He is supposed to be treated there so he can recover faster and take part in the first match. But he is certainly racing against time. It could be touch and go for the first couple of matches."
While the injury does put a cloud over Pietersen's availability at the start of the season, the player himself had earlier played it down.
"It's a niggle but I am wearing the gear to make sure I don't hurt it any further while shaking hands," Pietersen told the Times of India.
After being axed by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Pietersen had turned his entire focus on the Indian Premier League and has even expressed delight at being able to play cricket again.
Pietersen has already missed two complete seasons of the IPL due to injury (for Deccan Chargers in 2011 and Delhi Daredevils in 2013) and will be keen to shrug off any niggles and take the T20 event by storm.
The Daredevils are scheduled to play their first match of the seventh edition of the IPL against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Sharjah and the franchise, which had spent a whopping Rs 9 crore on the flamboyant Pietersen, would hope that their star batsman is ready in time for the opener
Kevin Pietersen to test fitness in warm-up game on Monday
New Delhi: Delhi Daredevils captain Kevin Pietersen will get a chance to test the injured little finger of his right hand on Monday when the team plays a practice match to get ready for their opening Indian Premier League encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 17.
Although his finger has been strapped for the past one week, Pietersen has batted in the nets and also faced throwdowns during the three-day session at the Airforce ground in Palam before boarding the Dubai-bound flight.
Team's CEO Hemant Dua said that there is no such information with him that Pietersen won't be available for the first match, contrary to reports in some quarters. "I have not received any information as yet that KP won't be playing the first match. I will get to know better once I reach there tomorrow. We have a practice match tomorrow," Dua told PTI on Sunday.
During team's jersey launch at a city hotel on Saturday, Pietersen was asked about the protective padding and he seemed dismissive about the state of the injury. "I sustained it in England but just trying to protect it and not shaking hands with anyone. But it's not a big problem," he answered a query at the launch on Saturday.
