Shastri in proposed IPL probe panel
The BCCI will propose to the Supreme Court on Tuesday the names of RK Raghavan, former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) head, JN Patel, former chief justice of the Calcutta High Court, and former India allrounder Ravi Shastri to constitute the panel to probe corruption allegations in the IPL.
The decision was taken at a working committee meeting in Mumbai on Sunday attended among others by former BCCI president Shashank Manohar.
In its previous order on April 16, the Supreme Court had asked the BCCI to come back with constructive, corrective measures to ensure a free and fair probe. Accordingly, the working committee of the board met with a single-point agenda on Sunday.
While multiple working-committee members who attended the meeting confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the names of the trio were finalised, BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel declined to spell them out. "We have finalised the three-member panel that will be proposed to the Supreme Court but considering the sanctity of the court, I cannot reveal their names," Patel told reporters after the meeting.
Some of the members, led by Delhi & District Cricket Association's Sneh Bansal, stressed on the need for proposing names with an "impeccable record and clean image". The committee discussed five names, before finalizing the three. While Shastri and JN Patel were unanimous choices, it is understood that Manohar opposed Raghavan's appointment. However, he could hardly gain any support. Among the other two names discussed was former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
The biggest surprise of the day was Manohar - who hadn't attended a single board meeting since handing over charge to N Srinivasan in October 2011 - representing the Vidarbha Cricket Association, with VCA president Prakash Dixit waiting in the adjoining enclosure.
While Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary Kasi Viswanathan, a close aide of sidelined BCCI president Srinivasan, attended the meeting, Saurashtra Cricket Association secretary Niranjan Shah, Kerala Cricket Association president TC Mathew and Tripura Cricket Association secretary Arindam Ganguly also attended as special invitees. PS Raman, a TNCA vice president, was also present at the BCCI office.
