Mahendra Singh Dhonihas been sacked as thecaptain of the Rising Pune Supergiants for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. The franchise has appointed Australia's Steve Smith as the new skipper. (Latest Cricket stories)According to sources, Dhoni has also been communicated about the decision by the franchise. It is believed, Dhoni has extended his full co-operation and is ready to help Smith in decision-making on the field.

While Dhoni is likely to keep his place in the side, the wicketkeeper-batsman is expected to bat up the order during the 10th season.Pune, one the two franchises to replace the suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, finished seventh in their debut season last year.Under Dhoni, the team managed to win only five of their 14 matches in the IPL 9.Dhoni's form was also a cause of concern for the side. He managed to score only 284 runs from 12 innings with only one fifty to his credit. The 35-year-old is one of the three captains to have won the cash-rich T20 league twice.

He led Chennai Super Kings for nine editions starting from the league's inaugural season in 2008.Under him, CSK won the IPL in 2010 and 2011 while the Champions League in 2010 and 2014.Dhoni recently stepped down as India's limited-overs captain, handing over the mantle to Virat Kohli in all three formats.

IPL 2017: MS Dhoni removed as Rising Pune Supergiants captain, Steven Smith to take over

In a shocker, Mahendra Singh dhoni has been sacked from Rising Pune Super Giants’ captaincy just 2 days before the auction. The news has not been confirmed by any of the parties but according to the latest reports, Australian captain Steven Smith will replace Dhoni for the 10th season of the league. Even though Pune won just 5 of their 14 IPL matches last year under him, Dhoni has a very impressive record in the Indian Premier League leading Chennai Super Kings to two title wins.
Dhoni was recently replaced as India’s limited-overs captain by Virat Kohli but the 35-year-old finisher ensured that he will continue to captain in the Indian Premier League. However, the franchises have decided to shoulder the responsibility on young Aussie skipper Smith, who has previously led Pune Warriors India and Rajasthan Royal stepping in for the usual captains.
This is the first time, that MS Dhoni has been removed from the leadership duties as on all the previous occasions, he himself decided to step down from the role. The former Indian captain also had a bad season with the bat last year with just 284 runs to his name from 12 innings and scored a solitary half-century.
