All the versions of IDM are similar to each other. But the actual reason of making regular updating of the software is to make it usable/compatible with the latest technology. For eg. you are using Firefox 21 and installed IDM 5.9 version, the downloader will not work for Firefox. All the time it will ask you to resolve this problem by updating your IDM to latest version.
