Remember when Cyanogen (Cyngn) shut down CyanogenMod and custom ROM development scene was endangered? Remember when we pointed out that the organisation that will replace CyanogenMod will need all the help that development community can provide? If not then let us remind you that it’s almost a month since the dramatic announcement by Cyngn and the death of CyanogenMod. The successor to take the place of CyanogenMod is LineageOS as announced previously.

After weeks of working on bringing back the necessary infrastructure and setting up the basic framework for both the hardware and software, the first builds of Lineage OS are rolling out. The new community with a new name, barebones website, Wiki, Download Portal and Install stats page and status page are all live and working well. LineageOS. Nightly builds for six devices are live on the Download Portal of LineageOS. These devices include Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, Nextbit Robin and Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

The name of the builds has been rebranded to ‘lineage’ while the build numbers follow the same scheme as CyanogenMod with 14.1 corresponding to Android Nougat 7.1.1; 14 to Android Nougat 7 and 13 with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

LineageOS detailed in a blog post that it will take time for the community to switch to pure nightlies and they are sticking to ‘Weekly’ release for the new updates ‘to be nice to all the donated hardware.’

One thing to note is that you will have to wipe your data before flashing to switch from CyanogenMod to LineageOS. The community has made Experimental data migration build to help the users who don’t want to wipe the data to change to LineageOS. The Experimental builds will be removed after two months to ensure that there is no confusion for first-time users.

Another thing to note is that the official LineageOS builds will be signed using a new private key for authentication along with signature permission control instead of public keys. Last but not the least, LineageOS will not come with Root access built into the ROM, and you will have to flash SuperSU after you install LineageOS.
