Chrome OS 56 Released; Brings New Material Design Changes, Bug Fixes, and More

Google has updated Chrome OS 56 to stable channel for all supported devices except Asus Chromebook Flip C100PA, Google Chromebook Pixel (2015), and Acer Chromebook R11. The latest Chrome OS build, which brings along material design, bug fixes, and feature enhancements, will be rolled out to the devices in [the next "several" days.

The Chrome OS version 56.0.2924.87 update brings along Material Design to the Chrome OS shelf as well as system menu. The shelf switches from a bar shape to a circle to note when a window or app is open, 9to5Google pointed out in its report. Further, there are animations that confirm every icon click, tap on the app drawer, notifications, and status tray results, as per the report.

Apart from the Material Design, Google has added a flash component updater and made the new version of the ChromeVox screen reader default across all Chromebooks. ChromeVox screen reader essentially helps the visually impaired users in using the platform with audio prompts and keyboard.

Other features that come with the update include the switch to HTML5 as default and the "not secure" label for HTTP websites. Further, the Web Bluetooth API allows Web apps to connect with the Bluetooth low energy devices.

Recently, several leaks suggested that
Microsoft is coming up with a simplified version of Windows 10, called Windows 10 Cloud, in order to fight the rising competition from Chromebooks.

Firefox Testing SnoozeTabs Feature, Lets You Snooze Tabs Until You Need Them

Mozilla is testing a new feature for Firefox that lets you manage tabs better. The SnoozeTabs feature essentially just shuts a tab, only to open it back at a later time. Using this new feature, the Firefox User can snooze any tab up to a specified time, and this tab will then open in the background at the mentioned time. Mozilla is testing Pulse, a developer feedback tool for Firefox.

The Firefox SnoozeTabs feature helps in managing your tabs better, and is useful for those users who work with multiple tabs on their browser. This feature will also allow you to remember important chores that you want to keep for later (but tend to forget at most times). SnoozeTabs lets a tab disappear for a while, and appear back on the browser once the snooze time ends. There's a bell icon that appears on the top-right of Firefox, clicking which will allow you to choose a time when you want the tab to return. There are options like later today, tomorrow, this weekend, next week, next month, for easy configuration. After choosing the option, the tab will go away until the time specified, at which point the tab will load in the background so that your current work is not disrupted. Chrome offers this in the form of a third-party extension called Tab Snooze which pretty much does the same thing.

Another feature that Firefox is testing is called Pulse which allows users to send feedback to the developers on which sites work well in Firefox and which sites don't. There's a new Pulse button added in the bookmark bar, and it allows for rating of a site's performance with one through five stars. This feature is mainly useful for Firefox engineers, as the feedback will help in work management.

As mentioned, Firefox is currently testing both these features, but it should arrive on the stable version soon. For all those who cannot wait, you can try out SnoozeTabs and Pulse right away by activating Mozilla's Test Pilot extension. This extension essentially allows users to try out work-in-progress features before they arrive on the stable channel. Test Pilot works for Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.

Today, we bring you the initial developer release of Opera 45. In this version we have an update for the Reborn project, introducing Whatsapp as the second messenger in the sidebar.

WhatsApp joins the club

We love using Messenger.com in Opera’s new sidebar. Today, we have added support for WhatsApp (web.whatsapp.com). This means you get a very easy way to use these messengers without needing to switch tabs. Similarly for Messenger.com, you can simply log in to the service and start chatting. We have also added a shortcut for quick access (⌘ + ⇧ + m on macOS, CTRL + SHIFT + m on Windows)

Firefox 52 Brings WebAssembly Support, Allowing Users to Run Complex Apps and Games

Mozilla has announced that the latest version of its Firefox browser, version 52, supports WebAssembly, a new binary format code developed by Mozilla alongside Apple,
Google, and Microsoft. It essentially enables even complex applications to run faster on the browser. The company says that it expects more developers to use WebAssembly to sped up their existing Web apps. Apart from WebAssembly, the version 52 update brings along several other features to the Mozilla browser.

Talking first about WebAssembly, currently, the online versions of various games and applications are pared down versions of the originals, as the original versions require much more processing than the browser is usually able to source. However, with WebAssembly, the scenario is going to change substantially, by providing more resources to these Web apps. "We expect that WebAssembly will enable applications that have historically been too complex to run fast in browsers - like immersive 3D video games, computer-aided design, video and image editing, and scientific visualisation," Mozilla said in its blog post.

Notably, it is not just complex apps that can make full use of WebAssembly, as existing apps that use JavaScript will also be able to reduce their loading times significantly with its implementation.

Web apps that have been written with WebAssembly will be able to run at "near-native speeds" as unlike JavaScript, all the code written by programmer is parsed and compiled before it even reaches the browser, David Bryant, Head of Platform Engineering at Mozilla, explained in his Medium post.

"Unlike other approaches that have required plug-ins to achieve near-native performance in the browser, WebAssembly runs entirely within the Web Platform," Bryant said.

Importantly, with the help of WebAssembly, programs written in languages like C/C++ can also be ported to Web and subsequently run with near-native performance, as per Bryant.

Apart from WebAssembly, with the version 52 update, Firefox browser automatically detects captive Wi-Fi portals and informs users if there is a need to log in. "Additionally, after Firefox detects a captive portal, it replaces certificate error pages with a message encouraging you to log in," the company said.

Further, with the new release, users will now be notified more actively with in-context alerts to inform them if a username or password field on a page is not encrypted with HTTPS. There are several other new additions that you can read about in company's official blog post about the update.

WebAssembly is now available with Firefox (version 52) on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and
Android. Even though browsers from Google and Microsoft are also expected to implement WebAssembly eventually, Firefox has now become the first company to offer it through its browser.
