Mumbai City FC defender and captain
Syed Rahim Nabi could be out of
action for up to three weeks after
suffering an ankle injury in the Hero
Indian Super League (ISL) opener
against Atletico de Kolkata.

Nabi had to leave the field in the
39th minute in the match at the Salt
Lake Stadium Kolkata on Sunday.
"As per the findings of the Mumbai
City FC medical team, Syed Rahim
Nabi has a contusion over the left
ankle/foot due to twisting of the
ankle joint. The MRI reveals that
there is neither a fracture nor a
ligament/soft tissue injury. There is a
suspected partial sprain of one of the
ankle ligament," a Mumbai City FC
media statement said Monday.

The India international is currently
under a knee cast and has begun his
rehabilitation with the medical team
saying that he could be out for up to
three weeks.

ISL 2014: Ankle injury rules out Mumbai City skipper Nabi for three weeks

Two games into the inaugural Indian
Super League and we've already seen
a lot of action - from goal-line
clearances and crunching tackles to
players cramping up in humid
conditions and reflex saves of the
highest order.

After Atletico de Kolkata's thumping
3-0 win over Mumbai City FC in the
opener, it was NorthEast United who
got the better of Sachin Tendulkar's
Kerala Blasters in Guwahati - edging
past them 1-0 in a nervy encounter.

Here are three most memorable
things from the second match of the
ISL:
NorthEast United's youth - the
good and bad: Robin Gurung is just
21-years-old and played like a star
last night - with a vital overhead
goal-line clearance in the dying
minutes of the match after
goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas was
caught off the line in a goalmouth
scramble. Gurung was again on the
line along with 22-year-old Felipe to
save the shot off the rebound.

21 year old Do Dong Hyun came off
the bench to add real impetus to
NorthEast's attack when it seemed
they needed to kill the game off. But
what was apparent was their waning
urgency on the pitch as the match
went on. Ricki Herbert's team made a
flying start - as is with so many
young teams around the world - but
it was their experienced opponents
started getting a grip on the match in
the second half. The side's
youthfulness is a great asset, but
their lack of concentration and
experience at the death will be
punished by better teams.

Talking about his team's prepration
ahead of FC Pune City's opening
Indian Super League match against
fans' favourites Delhi Dynamos on
Tuesday, the fomer French striker
David Trezeguet said that he is
excited about being part of India's
football renaissance and that his
team is looking very sharp and is
ready for the test against the side
from the capital city.

"Team is bonding well and Indian
players are looking good. Hopefully
their experience of playing with the
international stars will help them
become better players and who
knows one day they can play in top
leagues in Europe and around the
world," the Pune marquee player
said.

When asked about his experince with
the ISL at this nascent stage,
Trezeguet said he is pretty happy to
be part of the league and is hoping
that it can be a huge success.

New Delhi: Having received a
tremendous boost with a glamorous
opening night action in Kolkata, the
Indian Super league (ISL) bandwagon
reaches India's capital city on
Tuesday when Delhi Dynamos host
FC Pune City in the third match of
the inaugural football tournament at
the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.

Both teams, ahead of their first
match of the competition, will bank
on some impressive form in their
warm-up games.

The Delhi team, owned by cable TV
distribution company Den Networks,
won their three practice matches
easily with foreign recruits Mads
Junker, Morten Skoubo, Hans Mulder
and Pavel Elia all among goals.

But all eyes will, undoubtedly, be on
Italian World Cup winner Alessandro
Del Piero, possibly the biggest name
among the foreign recruits in the ISL.

ISL bandwagon reaches Delhi as Dynamos take on FC Pune City

Being a Probashi Bengali (a non-
resident Bengali), my affair with
Kolkata is a long-standing one. Born
to parents who were originally from
Kolkata, I have been brought up in
Delhi all my life. I always had a
strange feeling whenever I visited the
city, predominately because of the
culture difference. While I was
growing up, I have always seen
Kolkata as an outsider, without
having a chance to feel the soul, the
spirit of the city.
But each time I had been there, the
city gave me a sense of belonging,
offered me something new to take
back. The City of Joy, as it is
affectionately called, does something
to you which cannot be upturned.
Every time I have travelled to this
city, it left an everlasting impression
on me as a person.
My latest trip to the city was an
official one, for two days, to cover
the inaugural game of the Indian
Super League (ISL) - the new hope of
Indian football. I have always heard
of the city's madness for football but
it was only this time that I had the
opportunity to witness it from close
quarters.

ISL Tour Diary: Kolkata, a city that offers something new every time

Pune is a city known for sports,
especially cricket, badminton and
horse racing. What else do you
except in a city which is inhabited by
students and retired defense
personnel? In fact, modern
badminton was invented in Pune and
at one point a group of Britishers
seriously considered naming the
sport Poona.

But football and Pune? The sport is
not part of the city's past but it may
just become part of the city's present
and future.

On the weekends in most open
spaces, you can hear the sound of
boots kicking a ball. The Liverpool
FC-DSK Shivajians international
football academy, a sprawling state-
of-the-art residential facility on the
outskirts of the city, is a testimony to
the love the current generation of
Punities have for the beautiful game.

This was probably why the
Wadhawan Group and actor Hrithik
Roshan decided to invest in FC Pune
City. With an eye to develop young
talent FC Pune City has a strategic
tie-up with Italian football major ACF
Fiorentina.

The club's identity draws inspiration
from the pride of the city -
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. As a
tribute to him the club has
incorporated the fortress in their
logo. However, this fortress has no
features of Maratha artistic styles
instead it looks very European,
maybe as a deliberate attempt to
incorporate the cosmopolitan feel of
the city or maybe to give ACF
Fiorentina reassurance that they too
have a stake in the club. That being
said it is a good looking powerful
logo. Very easy to remember. The
flag, the horses and the orange and
purple color scheme add a very regal
touch to the identity of the club.

NEW DELHI: Time for the promos is
over. It's time to get down to brass
tacks. And Delhi's showpiece
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is set to
savour the blockbuster opening
release featuring Alessandro Del
Piero and David Trezeguet in lead
roles. To mark a new chapter in the
Capital's sporting landscape, the
stadium will host the of the Indian
Super League tie featuring hosts
Delhi Dynamos and Pune City FC on
Tuesday evening.

ISL: Points Table | Schedule & Result
The run-up to the event and the
opening ceremony in Kolkata had a
heavy dose of popular and time-
tested props. The bandwagon, now,
shifts to the Capital. Even if the rest
of the names don't ring any bell, a
39-year-old Alessandro Del Piero still
can attract and generate a lot of
interest in the people who have
enjoyed European leagues for the
last 20-odd years. It is time for them
to have a look at the stars in flesh
and blood.

The key point of interest will be the
battle between Del Piero and
Trezeguet, one Italian World Cup
winner and another having a
European championship medal with
France. One flourished as a striker
playing from the deep that the
Italians love to call trequartista and
earned the epithet of Il Phenomeno
for his vision, dribbling skills and a
knack of scoring incredible goals for
'Old Lady' Juventus. It was in 2000
under Marcello Lippi, Trezeguet
joined Juventus. It kicked off an
immensely fruitful attacking
partnership between the French
targetman and the Italian coach.

When match-fixing charges hit Juve
hard and they were relegated, both
of them stuck together to help the
team rise again. Del Piero had said,
"A true gentleman never leaves his
lady."

India's financial muscle in sports is
not restricted to cricket alone. The
Indian Premier League (IPL) T20
cricket, as the world knows, is cash-
rich and attracts the best cricketers
from around the world, but even in
football, franchisees in the Indian
Super League (ISL) are coming up
with offers that have made famous
names stop for a while and ponder.

The capture of Delhi Dynamos
marquee player Alessandro Del Piero
and signing of French star Nicolas
Anelka provides a glimmer of hope
that India can be an alternative
destination for players looking
beyond Middle East and the United
States.

Delhi Dynamos, for example,
splashed out around Rs 11 crore to
make Del Piero, a World Cup winner
with Italy in 2006, the highest paid
footballer in the ISL.

A marquee player for Australian club
Sydney FC last season, Del Piero
rejected offers from several clubs
around the world, but when Delhi
came calling with a four-month offer
of $1.8 million, the Juventus legend
could simply not refuse.

Del Piero is not the only player of
repute who is paid handsomely.
Nicolas Anelka could have so easily
been playing in the English Premier
League if he had not walked out of
West Brom following a five-match
ban imposed by the FA in England
for a 'quenelle' gesture. Mumbai City
FC will not mind as the French striker
came on board after agreeing a
three-month contract worth Rs 5.4
crore, ignoring earlier approaches
from FC Pune City (approx 4.8 crore)
and Chennaiyin FC (Rs 4.2 crore).

Brazilian midfielder Elano Blumer is
also among the best-paid players in
the ISL, earning Rs 4.8 crore as
Chennaiyin FC's marquee player, a
welcome change from his turbulent
days at Flamengo in Brazil.

David Trezeguet asked and got Rs 4.5
crore from Pune City FC, besides
nine business-class flight tickets and
five-star accommodation for his
family of eight.
