FC Goa unveil 24-man squad for third season of ISL

FC Goa unveiled their 24-man squad at the training facility in Nagoa to a rousing welcome from fans and well wishers ahead of the opening match of the Hero Indian Super League 2016.

There were huge cheers from the fans as each player’s name was called out.

Fan favourites Romeo Fernandes, Mandar Rao Dessai, Gregory Arnolin and Rafael Coelho walked onto the ground to huge cheers.

Marquee player Lucio who was retained for the second sea son expressed his delight at being able to come back for another year.

Said Lucio, “I am very happy to come back to a place like Goa where people are passionate about the sport.”

With the Gaurs narrowly missing out on the title last year, the former Internazionale defender said he expects the side to try even harder this year.

“We will try hard to win the title this year. Last year we were close. As a squad, we are trying hard in training to become better players. We want to bring joy to our fans and to the state of Goa,” he explained.

The club also unveiled the new kit design for the third season of the ISL. After sportswear giants Umbro were confirmed as the kit manufacturer, the club also unveiled Deltin Hotels as the principal kit sponsor for the third season.

MUMBAI: Star India will have five language feeds for the third season of the Indian Super League (ISL). The league will have English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Tamil feeds.

The matches will be telecast on the Star Sports network, Star Gold, and on regional channels Jalsha Movies, Asianet Movies and Vijay Super.

The English feed will be aired on Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 2 standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) versions. Star Sports 3 and Hindi movie channel Star Gold SD and HD will air the Hindi feed.

Jalsha Movies, Asianet Movies and newly launched Vijay Super will carry the Bengali, Malayalam and Tamil feeds, respectively.

The matches will also be live streamed on Star’s video-on-demand (VoD) platform Hotstar. The matches will be aired at 7 pm.

The list of international broadcasters remains unchanged from last year. Star has syndication deals with broadcasters across North America, Africa, Europe and Asia.

The broadcasters include Fox Sports (Australia), Turner (Brazil), Asian Television Network (Canada), Next Generation Sports Network (USA, Japan, Netherlands, Korea), Abu Dhabi Media Corporation (Middle East & North Africa), Viasat (Norway), Fox Sports (Sub-Saharan Africa), Sony TV (UK) and LeTV (China).

The broadcaster has four sponsors and six partners on board for the event. Hero is the title sponsor for the third consecutive year. It had signed a three-year deal for the title sponsorship. This is the third year of its partnership with the event.

Maruti Suzuki, DHL and Amazon are associate sponsors. Maruti Suzuki has come back for a third year as the associate sponsor of the league. Last year, Flipkart was the other associate sponsor besides Maruti.

ISL 2016 partners include Birla Tyres (Partner Plus), Amul, Puma (Official Ball Partner), The Muthoot Group (Official Referee Partner), Gatorade (Official Drinks Partner) and Imperial Blue. Birla Tyres is the only new partner while most others have renewed their partnership with ISL.

It must be noted that Star has clubbed on-ground and on-air sponsorships. Advertisers who sign up as sponsors and partners get on-ground presence along with on-air exposure.

ISL 2016 will be played from 1 October to 18 December. The tournament will have one match a day, which adds up to 61 matches including the semi-finals and the final.

ISL 2016 to Kick-Off With a Grand Opening Ceremony in Guwahati

A carnival atmosphere will fill the air when the opening ceremony of India Super League 3 celebrates the cultural diversity and spirit of the eight sisters before familiar foes Northeast United FC and Kerala Blasters resume their rivalry on the pitch here on Saturday.

For long the hub for producing and nurturing talent who ply their trade in the ISL, the I-League and the Indian national sides, the region has been rewarded with the opening ceremony by the tournament organisers.

It would not be an overstatement to say that the ISL's attempt at being recognised as the premier football tournament of India has been a success. This is largely due to the several high-profile signings over the past two years, and the emergence of new talent.

Former Atletico Madrid and Manchester United star Diego Forlan, Brazilian World Cup-winner Lucio, ex-Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda and former Liverpool and AS Roma star John Arne Riise are some of the big names leading various franchises in this edition of the tournament.

Besides the cultural part, act 1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium will feature a bevy of Bollywood stars gyrating to hindi chartbusters.

Bollywood heartthrobs Alia Bhatt, Jacqueline Fernandes and Varun Dhawan, along with about 500 performers are ready to rock the stadium in the short, yet spectacular, 30-minute show.

NorthEast United owner John Abraham today accompanied ISL Founder and Chairperson Nita Ambani to the state capital ahead of the much-awaited opening ceremony.

Mumbai City FC co-owner Ranbir Kapoor, Kerala Blasters FC co-owner Sachin Tendulkar and Chennaiyin FC co-owner Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be reaching.

The local flavour will be added by the famed Shillong Chamber Choir who have enthralled audiences across the globe.

Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu will be another star attraction at the gala event.

As far as football is concerned, both Northeast United and Kerala Blasters missed out on qualification to the semi-finals of the league last year and will be eager to go that extra mile this year.

While the northeasters narrowly missed the bus by coming fifth, Kerala Blasters, runner-up of the inaugural edition in 2014, finished with the wooden spoon in the eight-team franchise-based league.

NEUFC boss John does not believe in superstitions but he knows that teams hosting the opening ceremony triumphed in the first two editions.

"I am not a superstitious man, but when it is a happy co-incidence like this one is, we all hope that our dreams...

the dreams of all the fans of the northeast can come true this year," said John.

Northeast United finished at the bottom of the pool during the inaugural edition and John admitted they made mistakes. Last season, the team missed out on a semifinal berth by a whisker.

"This year, we hope to go one step further and at least make the semis. We will see where we go from there," he said.

Had it not been for Edel Bete's fingertips, Kerala Blasters would have celebrated a famous triumph in the inaugural edition. The Blasters fought their way to the final against Atletico de Kolkata, came agonisingly close but eventually lost to a last-minute goal against their Kolkata rivals.

The next season there was another disappointment and the pain was more acute. All through the second edition, Kerala Blasters struggled to find their feet and, despite a change in coaching personnel, could only finish at the bottom of the league.

For a state that takes great pride in its support for football, Kerala Blasters deserved much more than a bottom-place finish.

The franchise now has new co-owners and a new coach but some things, like the English coaches since the start of the ISL, has remained unchanged. The team will hope that its fourtunes change for the better this time around.

Hurting words :s .. My favorite tournament :nj ..

Maybe you like it . but to a genuine football lover its nothing but a crap tournament. It still doesn't have FIFA/AFC approval. I league our India's mainstream football league. But I league doesn't have such kinda glamour/prize money/sponsors due to marketing failure of AIFF. That's y Football in India is not so famous. 2.5 month's ISL can never ever develop our Indian football. Only foreign players earn money from this tournament...when I league clubs join this league, I mean merger of IsL with I league , then it will be a thing to watch.
Again I'm saying, its my personal opinion. you may like it or lump it.
