West Indies became the fourth team to earn an automatic qualification for the Women's World Cup in England in 2017 after the International Cricket Council (ICC), on Wednesday (November 23), ruled that the India Women's team is deemed to have forfeited each of the three matches it was due to play against Pakistan in the ICC Women's Championship.
The ICC Technical Committee awarded Pakistan two points for each forfeited game while it has ruled that "India shall be considered to have scored 0 runs in each of the 50 overs in each of the three matches and that its net run rate shall be adjusted accordingly."
India and Pakistan weren't able to play their sixth round games of the ICC Women's Championship due between August 1 and October 31 due to unpleasant political circumstances between the two nations.
The ICC issued a statement saying "it was sensitive to the current state of relations between the nations of India and Pakistan, but concluded that the BCCI had not been able to establish 'acceptable reasons' for not participating in this series."
The Technical Committee's decision means that there is no change to the current ICC Women's Championship standings. While Australia, England and New Zealand had already booked their berths for the Women's World Cup, West Indies Women profited from the ICC ruling, becoming the fourth and final team to earn an automatic spot in the multi-team event.
India, who finished fifth in the Women's Championship, will have to earn their World Cup spot by participating in the qualifier, to be played in Sri Lanka from February 7 to 21 next year, and need to finish in the top four to progress to the main event. South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Thailand are the other teams that will participate in the qualifying tournament.
