Dejected Dhoni still hopes of turnaround

10pakqv.jpg

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed the initial profligacy of his bowlers for the three-wicket loss to England in the third ODI but remained hopeful of what now seems like a miracle turnaround in the last two games of the series.
"The first 10 overs were crucial. We gave away too many runs. Otherwise spinners would have had a few more runs to play with," said Dhoni after Friday's three-wicket loss.

"It's not the first time it has happened to us. There was a phase when we suffered from the same malaise. If the rivals have to chase more than six runs per over, it becomes difficult for them but we gave away too many runs upfront," Dhoni said.

The Indian captain, however, maintained that the morale of his side hasn't gone down despite drawing blank in the England summer thus far.

"The boys are excited. They want to give more than 100 per cent. When it comes to motivational factor, we are not down and out. Luck at times hasn't been with us but the morale is high," he said.

After injuries, rain haunts India on Eng tour

New Delhi: India's elusive search for a win on this tour continued on Sunday when the weather Gods once again had their say in the end. It was purely bad luck for Team India as England needed 11 off 7 balls with two wickets in hands just when India were on roll with two wickets in two balls and an injured Stuart Broad to come when rain intervened for the third time in the match.

Asked to bat first, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni shared a blistering 169-run partnership for the fifth wicket to propel India to 280 for five and with some decent bowling and fielding, Indian fans all over the world would have hoped that this is India's day and with a win they can stay alive in the series, but surely luck has not been on India's side this whole tour.
First the tour was marred with a number of injuries to key players and then, when it looked that India will finally claw their way back with wins in the ODI series, rain has spoiled their party in all the four ODIs with first one being completely whitewashed, two ending in England victories and one tied, all thanks to Mr. Duckworth and Mr. Lewis.

Chasing 281 in the fourth ODI, England lost quick wickets early on and when it looked that Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara will take the match away from India, Bell departed to a soft dismissal and soon Ben Stokes presented Ravichandran Ashwin with a return catch on seven. And when Tim Bresnan was cleaned up by RP Singh, all eyes were on Bopara to steer the ship home.

What followed was barely believable. Two brief rain interruptions stopped play — the first of which saw India ahead by two runs on Duckworth-Lewis and the second put India behind by two runs on D/L method. When players returned, Bopara and Graeme Swann scored at a brisk pace to keep the run-rate under control.

With 11 needed from eight deliveries, Swann was brilliantly run-out by Munaf Patel off his own bowling and Bopara picked out Jadeja in the deep on the very next ball. When it looked that finally India can register their first win and stay alive in the tournament, it stared raining cats and dogs, with the big screen at the Lord's stadium showing 270/8 as the par score in 48.5 overs. Finally the match was called off, declaring the outcome as a tie according to the D/L method.

Once again, when India tried to get up, something has pushed them back, though this time it's not the injuries, but the rain.

We will give our best shot in final game: Dhoni

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hoped that his boys would be able to win at least the fifth and the final ODI against England after the fourth ODI at Lord's ended in a tie due to rain interruption. India were staring at their first win on English soil but rain interrupted the match for the third time w
hen the hosts needed 11 runs to win off seven balls with two wickets in hand.

But with the rain falling the Duckworth/Lewis method came into play and India were unlucky. England clinched the series with still a match left.

"We have not won anything. It has been a long tour, we have one more game, we will give it our best," said Dhoni, who scored 78.
Dhoni had words of praise for Suresh Raina, who struck a blistering 84, with whom he shared a crucial 169-run that propelled India to 280 for five and the tourists seemed set to secure their first win over England, having suffered a whitewash in the Test series.

"We know Raina has fair amount of firepower and if he gets going can destroy any attack in the world," said Dhoni.

The India captain also praised part-time spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up the crucial wicket of Ian Bell, who scored 57.

"Jadeja is doing his job brilliantly. In conditions like these, it is hard for the part-timers. Today when the ball got wet, we had enough resources," said Dhoni.

Raina, who was adjudged as the joint Man of the Match with Ravi Bopara, said he was disappointed at not getting a big score.

"I was batting well but not getting big scores. My game plan is simple, when I get the ball in my areas, I play my game. Disappointing for Ravi to not have got the 100," he said.

India go winless on a tour for the ninth time

10hvfj5.jpg

New Delhi: Surprising as it might seem, India's demolition at the hands of England and close to 100 per cent record for all the wrong reasons was not the first time that they had gone winless on a tour. However, it lists among the most damaging ones in terms of the losses that were incurred.

By going down in the fifth and final one day international (ODI) at Cardiff, the Indians lost the series 0-3, following their loss in the T20 international and their 4-0 whitewash in the Test series that was built up as a battle for the number one spot.
The tied match at the home of cricket and the washed out affair in Chester-le-Street were the only occasions when defeat was avoided.

It was the ninth time that India had not tasted victory on an entire tour.

The tour of Sri Lanka in 1997 which will be remembered for the 576 run partnership for the second wicket between Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama, followed by the home side's total of 952/6 in the first Test was not a pleasant one for the Indians.

Although both the Tests were drawn, India proved to be no match for the Lankans in the ODI series and were blanked 3-0.

India had a disappointing tour of England in 1996, when they lost the Test series 1-0 and were beaten 2-0 in the ODI series. The back to back centuries of Sourav Ganguly including the one at Lord's in his debut innings was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal outing.

India gave a good account of themselves on their tour of Pakistan in 1989-90 and matched their arch rivals in the Test series with both teams remaining unbeaten. However, the Pakistanis proved to be superior in the ODI series which they won 2-0.

The 1988-89 Caribbean tour is right up there with India's most woeful performances. India were whitewashed 5-0 in the ODI series and lost three of the four Tests and never came close to winning a single game.

The West Indies avenged their 1983 world cup defeat at the hands of India in grand fashion later that year when they crushed them 5-0 in the ODI series and won the six Test series 3-0.

India suffered a 1-0 Test series loss and were beaten 2-0 in the ODIs against New Zealand in 1980-81 and the margin of defeat was identical when India toured England in 1982.

The Indians lost all three Tests and both ODIs against England in 1974 which so far has been the only ocassion when they have gone on to lose each and every international fixture on a tour.
