Tiwary replaces Rohit in India's ODI squad

Mumbai: Middle-order batsman Manoj Tiwary was on Sunday named as a replacement for the injured Rohit Sharma in India's one-day squad for the remaining four matches against England.

Sharma was ruled out for the remaining ODIs due to a finger injury he suffered while batting in the rain-hit opening match in Chester-le-Street on Saturday.

Rohit Sharma fractured his right index finger during the first ODI against England, and has been ruled out of the remainder of the series as a result.

"Manoj Tiwary has been named his replacement in the India ODI squad. He will join the team at the earliest," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

The series stands at 0-0 with the second ODI scheduled in Southampton on Tuesday.

Eng can beat India 4-0 in ODIs: Alec Stewart

London: Former England captain Alec Stewart won't be surprised if the home team record a clean sweep over India in the ongoing ODI series as well, irrespective of the visitor's resolute show in the rain-marred opener at Cheste-le-Street.

"India may have begun the series as slight favourites but I wouldn't be surprised if England finish off the season with a clean sweep in all forms of the game and add this trophy to the growing collection," Stewart said.
In the first ODI of the five-match series last weekend, India were in the the drivers seat with England, chasing a competitive 275-run target, were tottering at 27 for two before heavy showers forced the match to be called off.

But Stewart was of the view that the weather intervened far too early during England's innings for serious talk about the hosts being 'saved by the rain'.

"This England side has it in them to rise again after such early reverses," he said.

"After the 4-0 thrashing of India in the Test series followed by the one-off T20 victory last week, England will want to show they are also making good progress in the 50-over game which for so long has been their Achilles heel," the former wicket-keeper added.

Stewart, however, has no doubts that to record a clean sweep, England will have to play out of their skin against the the world champion Indian side.

"As England march on towards world cricket supremacy they will be severely tested by India, the current World Cup holders, throughout these One Day Internationals," he wrote in his column for Daily Mirror.

He insisted that having never won the World Cup, England will be desperate to break the jinx in the 2015 edition of the tournament to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

"Captain Alastair Cook is fully aware that if this group of players want to be bracketed alongside the truly great West Indian and Australian teams of recent times then they must become more consistent in ODIs and learn what it takes to win in all conditions," Stewart said.

Injured Sachin ruled out of the ODI series

Chester-le-Street: India's nightmare tour of England continued as batting mastero Sachin Tendulkar on Monday was ruled out of the ODI series with a toe injury. He is the eighth player to be injured on the current tour following Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Rohit Sharma and Harbhajn Singh.

Tendulkar missed the first one-dayer in Durham on Saturday with a recurrence of an old toe injury that left him struggling to jog and was ruled out of the rest of tour after meeting the surgeon in Southampton.
"Tendulkar has been ruled out of the series and he will take another four weeks to regain fitness," team manager Shivlal Yadav said.

The veteran batsman, who captains Mumbai Indians, is also almost certain to miss the Champions League Twenty20 event to be held at four venues in the country from September 19 to October 9.

The batting maestro, who is just one short of completing the incredible milestone of 100 international centuries, will have to wait longer with this latest injury.

Good opportunity for youngsters to prove their mettle: Parthiv

Fresh from his fantastic knock of 95 at Chester—le— Street, Parthiv Patel feels that the current ODI series is an ideal opportunity for the youngsters to step up and make best use of the opportunities.

“It’s a good opportunity for youngsters to prove themselves. If they do, it would be good for themselves as well as the team,” said Patel ahead of the second ODI here on Tuesday.

Sachin Tendulkar joined the list of injured Indian cricketers going home on Monday when it was found that his toe injury would take at least four weeks to recover.

The late realization that Tendulkar is missing would leave the visitors a batsman short as Manoj Tiwary and Ravindra Jadeja are unlikely to join the squad before September 7.

It would imply that India would go into the match with only six frontline batsmen, including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and would perforce be playing five frontline bowlers.

It would also increase responsibility for the likes of Patel who have shown themselves to be in good touch. The left—hander though insisted it wouldn’t help if he changed his natural aggressive style and look to bat through the 50 overs.

“I would play my natural game. Personally, I don’t need to change my game. I scored with it in West Indies and in the first ODI.

“However, it is everyone’s responsibility that once he gets in, he needs to score big runs.”

Bouncer will remain a legitimate tactic for us: Broad

LONDON: England pacer Stuart Broad says Indian batsmen should be prepared for more short-pitched stuff in the ongoing ODI series as bouncers will continue to be a "legitimate tactic" for the host bowlers despite causing injuries in the visiting camp.

It was Broad's bouncer which broke Rohit Sharma's index finger in the rained-out ODI opener on Saturday ruling out the Indian batsman from the rest of the series.

Earlier, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir were also struck by bouncers in the Test series.

But Broad said nothing will hold back the English bowlers from bowling more bouncers in the ongoing five-match ODI series.

"You never like to see a professional get injured, but this is a brutal sport and it certainly hit him hard," Broad was quoted as saying by the newspapers here.

"You could obviously hear his screams in the middle, and when the physio got hold of him it looked quite badly dislocated as well," he said, recollecting Rohit's trauma.

The second one-dayer is on Tuesday and Broad promised that "the bouncer will be a legitimate tactic at the Rose Bowl, where the pitches for the Test match and ODIs have been pretty quick."

"We've got a full battery of pace bowlers, and although you need to adjust your skills with slower balls and yorkers against a powerful batting line-up like India, I'm a believer in adapting to the conditions," he said.

"If it's fast and bouncy that means using the short ball -- so hopefully the groundsman will help us out."

Southampton: Subramaniam Badrinath was on Monday named as replacement for Sachin Tedulkar who has been ruled out of the remainder of India`s ongoing five-match ODI series against England due to a toe injury.

Tendulkar was carrying the injury for quite a while but the problem aggravated just before the opening match of the series at Chester-le-Street on Saturday, eventually paving the way for Parthiv Patel`s last-minute inclusion to the playing eleven.

"Sachin Tendulkar has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against England due to a toe injury. He has been advised rest for four weeks. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has chosen S Badrinath to replace him," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Badrinath, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2008, has scored 79 runs in seven one-dayers so far.

The Tamil Nadu batsman was also in the squad for India`s tour of West Indies earlier this year, but failed to impress.

It has been a disastrous tour for India as many leading players, including Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Yuvraj Singh suffered injuries at various stages.
