In a notification issued today, Indian Government has restricted the import of Laptops, Tablets, AIO Personal Computers, Servers and Ultra Small Form factor computer with Immediate effect. It is said to be done with the motive of pushing local manufacturing.

Notification

Govt stays implementation of laptop, PC import curbs till October 31

"Import consignments can be cleared till October 31, 2023 without a licence for restricted imports," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) stated in the notification.

Good move, but time for India to make plans, tell it to the world and stick to it instead of haphazardly blocking imports. That will give foreign companies more trust to set up shop here. Look at how china is killing every European industry right now and the European companies are willingly shifting manufacturing to China anyway.

They should have done this much much earlier to boost local production and not abruptly. At least the stay gives the necessary breather for the companies.

Since now Russia has too much INR in cash and only wants RMB for Oil, India is desperately looking ways to at least keep the deficit in check. But honestly, it will still be not enough, imho. We should be seeing few more such things in coming days.

This will be going to be good for us in the long run for sure, but I still think it is too late and abrupt.

On 1st Aug, Jio launches Cheap Laptop
On 3rd Aug,Govt restricted on importing laptops
Co incidence or is it called Business ?

Don't believe everything which are spread on WhatsApp or Social media bro.. Jio launched it's first generation of laptop in October last year.. the govt. decision might be coincidence or business, that's a different story.. but the WhatsApp forwards which relates the Aug 1st jio launch with the import ban is actually the business.. they are trying to make business out of this.. no, i am not a BJP/govt. supporter but i don't blindly believe in whatsapp university either..

Also govt. has only banned the import of fully assembled units. Brands can still assemble units in India and sell them. Already Dell, HP, and Lenovo have manufacturing/assembly units in India. They won't be affected much by the ban. This ban might affect only Apple on large scale for its iPads and MacBooks. But it might encourage Apple and all other brands to setup units in India, which might be a good thing.

And Jio's laptop is not even a full fledged laptop. It's more like a Chromebook. The ban on import of laptops is no way going to skyrocket the sales of JioBook. Those who plan to buy a laptop will never buy Jio book. Laptops features and use cases are entirely different from that of a netbook or Chromebook. Atleast if Jio had launched a proper windows laptop, then these propaganda would make some sense.

Can we bring Mac book from USA for personal purpose after 31-Oct-23?

Yes. You can carry 1 device. Even you can order through Amazon USA, eBay, Alibaba etc. and get it delivered after duly paying the excise duty. Read the linked notification in the first post for full details.
