I haven't encountered any grid collapse since 2012 Olympics. I was too young to understand what happened. But remembered country be made fun by people of London. Because they hosted Olympics and our electricity grid collapsed.

Meanwhile coming to point. Can our laptops, TVs, ovens, fans etc. be damage if the grid collapses tonight? Should we turn off everything as precaution?

No you should not
Don't switch off anything except light
It can unbalance our grid

Okay, but if the grid collapses. Nothing happens to electronic items? I am worried as nothing can be repaired or replaced during lockdown.

Nothing gonna happen. Don't worry bro.
Modi ji asked to Switch Off only light that too in your home only.
You shouldn't switch off AC, Fridge , TV , Fan whatever you have running for those 9 minute. And besides that , Street light , light at Police station , Hospital will remain unaffected .
And it's your personal choice. If you don't feel right you must not switch off Any thing. It's not mandatory. It's optional.

Guys on a positive note, let's not switch off lights but light diya as our PM said.

An official of PowerGrid Corporation, which operates the national grid of transmission network, said that though the situation calls for notice, it is not alarming and the grid operators are well prepared to handle sudden drop in power demand.
"Actually considering the need of pan India lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, Peak Demand in the country is already lower by about 20 per cent. So, the national and regional load dispatch centres are already grappling with low demand a further drop on April 5, should not be a problem that can't be handled with ease," the official said

As per power ministry data, on April 2, 2020, the maximum power demand met in the country stood at 1,25,817 MW, almost 20 per cent lower than April 2, 2019 figure of 1,68,326 MW.

99 percent you shouldn't have any problem. Power grid will have reactive loads which will balance such situation. That's how the operators will try to manage it. There are safeties built at various levels like sub stations, transformers and even our homes (circuit breakers). Important thing is NOT to turn off anything else apart from lights. If majority don't follow it, that puts the minority who follows it at risk. Let's hope we will get through this safely.

Government is aware of the situation and power sector is in alert mode, of course their will be sudden drop (when everyone turn off lights) and then sudden spike (when they turn them back on) and it is also true that during lockdown Industries are shut down which have already reduced electric demand by 25-28% from 160 to 125 GW but we have got time to prepare for this.
Electrical appliances will, of course, stop working if the power goes out. This is inconvenient but not necessarily harmful. When electrical power comes back after an outage, it goes through a surge condition. This "tidal wave" of electricity can damage appliances left turned on.

Don't turn off anything except lights, but if grid collapses then switch off them to protect from tidal wave.

Will Modi's call to switch off lights at 9pm for 9 minutes lead to power grid collapse?
