MUMBAI: Rattled by the launch of Reliance Jio’s 4G services, which promise cheap data along with a suite of news and entertainment apps, other telcos are formulating strategies to retain their customers from moving to their newest competitor.

Accordingly, Idea Cellular is planning its own range of digital services like Idea TV, Idea News and Magazines, Idea Music, Idea Chat, Idea Videos, Idea Games and Idea Storage.

Idea Music, Idea Videos, Idea Games are scheduled to launch in the exit quarter of the current fiscal while Idea TV, Idea News and Magazines, Idea Chat and Idea Storage are expected to launch in FY18. Idea already has a mobile wallet called Idea Money, which currently has more than 3.4 million subscribers.

The telco has identified video streaming, music streaming, instant messaging, banking, online games, bill payment, cloud storage and instant messaging as the services of future that will gain huge traction.

Bharti Airtel owns services like Wynk Movies and Wynk Music. Reliance Jio has a range of apps like Jio TV, Jio Chat, Jio Music, Jio Mags, Jio Xpress News and Jio Cinema.

As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, Jio TV has increased its total TV channel offering to 368, enabling it to match that of cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) operators.

The channels are spread across 10+ genres and 15+ languages. When Reliance Jio launched on 5 September 2016, it was offering 300 TV channels.

Jio Play has 112 news channels, 90 entertainment channels, 32 movie channels, 31 music channels, 23 infotainment channels, 23 kids channels, 21 devotional channels, 18 sports channels, 11 lifestyle channels and 7 business news channels.

Reliance Jio , which has shaken up the telecom industry in India with its offer of free voice calls and mobile internet pricing at a fifth of current rates, has secured content deals with major broadcasters like Star India, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), Sun TV Network, Sony Pictures Networks India, NDTV, TV Today Network, Raj TV, PTC Network, Turner India, and Discovery Communications India. TV18, Viacom18, and Eenadu Television are, of course, part of Ambani’s media business.
