Stuart Broad fined for public criticism of match officials

Chittagong: England captain Stuart Broad was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for publicly criticising match officials following his side's Group 1 match against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20 on Saturday.

The charge was related to comments made by Broad following his side's loss to New Zealand in a match reduced by rain and decided via Duckworth-Lewis Method.

Broad was found to have breached Article 2.1.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match official or team participating in any International Match."

Broad on Sunday admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction offered to him by Javagal Srinath of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.

Explaining his decision, Srinath said, "Umpires are the final judges of the fitness of the ground, weather or light for play. Weather decisions are the most difficult to make, but the umpires make the best decision possible, taking all factors into account. Such public criticism is not good for the spirit of the game. Mutual respect between players, match officials and administrators is paramount to the game of cricket."

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Aleem Dar, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire S Ravi.

The range of permissible sanctions for all first Level 1 offences is a warning or reprimand and/or the imposition of a fine of up to 50 per cent of the applicable match fee.

Injured Rubel ruled out of WT20; Ziaur

Bangladesh pace bowler Rubel Hossain has been ruled out of the World T20s with a finger injury. He has been replaced by allrounder Ziaur Rahman.

Rubel sustained the injury during Bangladesh's match against Hong Kong when he attempted to take Irfan Ahmed's catch at short third-man. He didn't return to the field for the rest of the game. An X-ray on Friday revealed he had dislocated and relocated his ring finger.

Ziaur, a T20 specialist and a regular member in the format since his debut in 2012, was the surprise exclusion when the Bangladesh World T20 squad was first announced last month. The selectors had said at the time that Farhad Reza was picked ahead of him due to better form but Ziaur has a 140-plus strike rate in T20 internationals. In the Asia Cup, he had two good batting performances and one good bowling outing.

Bangladesh's other injury concern, Mashrafe Mortaza, who has suffered a rib injury during the Afghanistan match on March 16, is on the road to recovery but a final decision is likely to be taken in the next two days.
