Suresh Raina credits Dada for his good form

DHAKA: Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a cricketer is being dropped. The break allows the player to go back to the drawing board, play domestic cricket, work on shortcomings and when the opportunity knocks again, he comes back as an improved player.

The axe from the one-day team for the Asia Cup seems to have done wonders for southpaw Suresh Raina. He was struggling in the series against Australia and West Indies at home and didn't impress in South Africa and New Zealand either.

Back in the side for the ICC World T20, Raina looks lighter and hungrier and is hitting the ball sweeter. He is also getting into position earlier, which is helping him play the short ball well. Scores of 41 and 54 not out in the warm-up matches against Sri Lanka and England respectively and 35 not out in the Super 10 clash against Pakistan are indicative of the fact that Raina is back in business.

What did he do when he was out of the side? "I analysed my game. Worked hard in the nets with my coach and played a few matches in domestic cricket. I also did a lot of work on my fitness," he informed. Raina even sought the help of former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, another southpaw, and the tips seem to be working well.

"I spoke to him over the phone and he was very sweet. He pointed out certain things about my footwork and my mental make-up. I am looking forward to working with him again." Raina's game had collapsed last season when he was promoted to the No. 4 slot in place of Yuvraj Singh in the ODI format.

Match Facts: India v West Indies

Facts:

These sides have only met three times previously in T20Is; West Indies has won two of them.

Samuel Badree (West Indies) has the best economy rate of any bowler since the start of 2013 to have bowled at least 200 balls in T20Is (5.03).

Chris Gayle (West Indies) has struck more sixes in T20Is since June 2012 than any other player (32).

Darren Sammy recorded figures of 4/16 the last time these teams faced off in this format.

India has won the last four T20Is in which it has batted second.

Key Battles:

Suresh Raina v Sunil Narine

India’s Suresh Raina guided his side to a comfortable win over Pakistan in its opening ICC World Twenty20 match by making 35 in just 28 balls. His form could not have come at a better time having struggled for form in other formats for his country of late but while his form may have dipped, he should his unquestionable quality in playing a very mature innings.

Raina’s innings against Pakistan was characterised by a maturity in recognising the patience required to chase down a modest target, highlighted by how many singles he picked up.

Raina needs just six runs to become only the second Indian batsman to reach 900 runs in T20Is and although that sounds a straight-forward task, he could well be facing the wrath of Sunil Narine.

Narine comes into this match having picked up figures of 4/24 against Sri Lanka and will back himself in the sub-continent to continue this sort of form.

Chris Gayle is 85 short of becoming the leading run-scorer in T20 games..and There are no Indians in the top 30 leading wicket-takers in T20Is while three West Indians feature..
