Google Pixel XL was launched earlier this month with the base 32GB model priced at $769. The IHS Markit teardown reveals that its manufacturing cost is not more than $285.

Google launched its first smartphones – Pixel and Pixel XL earlier this month. Carrying a tagline ‘Made by Google,’ both smartphones are placed in the premium category and directly compete with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The Google Pixel starts at $649 in the US (which is Rs 43,400 approximately) and the Google Pixel XL starts at $769 (Rs 51,400 approximately). As for India pricing, the Pixel starts at Rs 57,000, whereas the Pixel XL starts at Rs 67,000. As customary, IHS Markit’s latest teardown report on the Google Pixel XL 32GB variant shows that it only costs $285 to manufacture, which is approximately Rs 19,100.

Since the Pixel XL smartphone stands at the high-end segment, the cost of manufacturing is in line with the market price of the smartphone which is $769. The stark difference between the manufacturing cost and the market price of the Pixel XL smartphone clearly shows that Google stands at gaining huge profit from the smartphone, but that cannot be confirmed, as the other costs like R&D and marketing are not included.

Andrew Rassweiler, senior director of cost benchmarking services for IHS says, “Total BOM costs for the Google Pixel XL are, not surprisingly, in line with those of other competitors, because the supply base and specs are very similar from phone to phone – whether it’s an iPhone, a Galaxy-series phone or the Google Pixel XL.” The Pixel smartphones have already been touted as a clear competition to Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and also to existing Samsung premium smartphones. He also agrees with this universal statement saying, “The Pixel clearly targets the same top-end flagship space occupied by the Apple iPhone and top-end Samsung Galaxy lines, with retail pricing points that directly compete with these products.” IHS Markit also believes that the fall down of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 can be advantageous for Google.

The teardown shows that the most expenses were made on the display and the processor of the Google Pixel XL. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor clocked at 2.15GHz, and it costs $50. As for its display, the Google Pixel XL features a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, and its cost comes to $58. In the photography department, the Google Pixel XL sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, PDAF and laser auto-focus. Up front, it sports an 8-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture with fixed focus. The cost of the cameras on the Pixel XL smartphone comes to $17.50.

The Pixel XL uses a 3,450mAh battery which costs $4. The total manufacturing cost of its aluminum plus plastic body along with the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 comes down to $35. The 32GB onboard storage and RAM of 4GB costs $26.50 for the Pixel XL. The manufacturing cost of antennas, connectors, microphones, speakers, etc, comes to a total of $24. As for the audio codec, amplifier and the different sensors including the fingerprint sensor, the cost of manufacturing results to $15.50. It is already known that Google is following Apple’s rulebook by taking control over both the hardware and software part of the Pixel smartphones. Google has also adopted Samsung’s AMOLED display technology and used battery by LG, which is ironical as the Pixel smartphones have created a tough competition atmosphere for its Android counterparts. Not only are the Pixel smartphones competing against Apple’s iPhone but also other Android smartphones.

Google’s Pixel smartphones have already made their way to India and the smartphones start at a price of Rs 57,000. The Google Pixel and Pixel XL come in two variants of 32GB and 128GB storage options. Both the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone have the same specifications and features except for the display size, resolution and battery capacity. The Pixel sports a 5-inch full HD display and 2,770mAh battery, whereas the Pixel XL comes with a 5.5-inch QHD display and is armed with a 3,450mAh battery.

Google had made very tall claims about the security feature of its new Pixel range of smartphones –only to be proved otherwise.
A group of white hat hackers have actually managed to break into the Google smartphones.
These hackers are from the Chinese security software company Qihoo 360.
At the recently held 2016 PwnFest hacking competition in Seoul, the hackers got into Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone in lees than a minute.
They have also won a cash prize of $120,000 for this.
A similar hacking challenge was launched by Google in September this year.
Google has recently announced 'The Project Zero Prize' contest wherein it is offering two smartphones Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X for hacking.
The goal of this contest is to find a vulnerability or bug chain that achieves remote code execution on multiple Android devices knowing only the devices’ phone number and email address.

Since launch, Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL have become the most talked-about Android devices worldwide. And now, Google is updating the smartphones with features that not only improve them, but also help them better compete with the likes of the iPhones. These new features in question are double-tap and raise-to-wake.

With the roll out of these new features, a double-tap will allow Pixel users to tap the screen to wake it up and view alerts and notifications. The raise-to-wake feature is similar to what was introduced for iPhones on iOS 10. Essentially, just raising the phone will automatically wake the screen. Google is slowly rolling out the new feature to all users, however, presently it has only been made available for users in Canada, reports Droid Life . Although, it is fairly important to note that these features aren’t really new to Android, and they have existed in one form or another on previous Google devices like the Nexus 6P.

Once the feature is released internationally, here’s how you can enable it on you Pixel smartphone. Head to the ‘Moves’ section in the general settings panel, there you would notice the new ‘Double-tap to check phone’ and ‘Lift to check phone’ options after update, enable them to use the features.

If this update is what will possibly convince you to jump the river to the Pixel land, this may be a good time to invest in one. Flipkart has introduced some exchange discounts and cashback offers, making the Pixel and Pixel X L smartphones even more enticing than before. The offer is valid till November 30. You can now exchange your old smartphone for a new Pixel and get up to Rs 26,000 off, bringing the price down to Rs 31,000 from Rs 57,000 for the 32GB storage variant. However, the maximum discount is applicable on Apple iPhone 6s Plus, and the exchange value for other smartphones differ based on the model and brand. The age and condition of your existing smartphone will also be an important factor that will determine its exchange value. Besides the exchange, users can also get a flat Rs 7,000 instant discount if they use an HDFC credit card, bringing the effective cost down to Rs 24,000.

Going by the exchange and HDFC discount of Rs 33,000, the Pixel (128GB) will set you back by Rs 33,000 instead of the regular price of Rs 66,000. Similarly, the Pixel XL (32GB) will cost you Rs 34,000 and the Pixel XL (128GB) will cost you Rs 43,000. For those who don’t have an HDFC Bank credit but have Axis Bank Buzz credit card can avail Rs 200 off on the Pixel smartphones. What’s more, Flipkart is also offering no cost EMI option for Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, Citibank, HSBC, ICICI, SBI and Standard Chartered bank credit cards with EMI’s as low as Rs 3,167 per month for up to 18 months tenure.

Google Pixel, Pixel XL update rolls out with double-tap, raise-to-wake features

Google on Monday released the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Nexus and Pixel devices, and the update has begun rolling out across the world. A Gadgets 360 staff member received the update on his Pixel XL smartphone, and learnt that the smartphone now supports 4G VoLTE, compatible with Reliance Jio in India.

To use 4G VoLTE, Google Pixel and Pixel XL users will need to enable Enhanced 4G LTE Mode in Settings > Mobile network settings. This will let you "use LTE services to improve voice and other communications (recommended)". Once activated, users will see a HD symbol in their status bar, with the explanation "Device is HD capable".

The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Google Pixel XL is 263.6MB in size, and also brings the December Android Security Patch. If you haven't yet received the update, and can't wait to try out the VoLTE feature, you can upgrade to the latest version via the OTA files on Google's site.

The update for Pixel smartphones fixes critical bugs, and also improves the stability and performance of the devices. The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update also adds gender counterparts for emoji characters that previously only had male or female representation. Google has also added support for GIF images directly from keyboard on supported apps. Some of the apps that support GIF images include Google Allo, Google Messenger, and Hangouts.
