To help limit distractions in your video call, you can filter out background noise. Meet can remove background noises such as typing, closing a door, or the sounds of a nearby construction site.
  • Audio capture from screen sharing won’t be affected by noise cancelling.
  • Meet filters out noises that don’t sound like voices. Voices from TV or people talking at the same time won’t be filtered out.
  • If non-speech is an important part of your call, like playing musical instruments, turn off noise cancellation

Google announced that it's giving the Meet Android app the same visual UI overhaul that the iOS app received last month. The color scheme has shifted from that sickly green hue to a much bolder blue. Starting a new meeting now gets a dedicated button that lets users start a call instantly, schedule a meeting in Google Calendar, and quickly share meeting joining info with others.

This is a server side rollout. You should eventually get it.

Without a doubt, 2020 was the year of video calling. And for us, that meant making sure every student, team, and family could jump on a call from any device and have a reliable, safe experience. Google Duo and Google Meet hosted over one trillion minutes of video calls globally. For perspective, that’s equal to more than 18 billion hour-long virtual workouts in a single year!

Google Meet and Duo help you share moments that matter

Before now, creating a Google Meet conference required creating a nickname (or allowing Google to generate one for you), then it would give you a link you could share with others. Google is now speeding up this process with a tweaked interface on meet.google.com. Clicking the 'New meeting' button now provides three options: create a meeting for later, start a call now, or schedule a meeting in Google Calendar.

Google Meet introduces new options for creating a meeting

A new 'Check your audio and video' button is being added to the landing page for Google Meet links. "With this new feature," the company wrote, "you can enter meetings confident that your technology is working and that you’ll appear the way you want [to] others." You can see a quick preview of your settings, and even record a short video clip, which is especially useful for checking if you're on the right microphone.

Unfortunately, it seems like the new functionality is limited to Meet on the web, as the blog post didn't mention the Android or iOS apps. Google says the button should be rolled out to everyone within the next 15 days.

Google Meet can now test your setup before joining calls
