We use internet on a daily basis, and there are times when we feel it’s relatively slower than usual. To double check the internet speed, a lot of us search the phrase ‘speed test’ on Google. There are plenty of sites that offer free speed test tools, with Ookla’s speedtest.net being a common tool. Now, it looks like Google is building its own internet speed test tool, and it could be built right into the search results.

Looks like Google is testing their own internet speed test (query = "check internet speed") - n seeing it live --
Spotted by Twitter user Dr. Pete Meyers (via TheNextWeb), he shared the screenshot of the feature. The tool appeared after firing a search for ‘internet speed test’. The tool aims to test upload speed, download speed and latency. As the tool doesn’t seem to have rolled out in India, we could not test it out ourselves. However, as per the screenshot, it looks like clicking on the ‘run speed test’ button will perform the test and display results.
Google’s support webpage has detailed how the tool works. It relies on Measurement Lab for performing the tests. Founded in 2009, the organization studies global internet performance. Before you take the test, Google does warn you that the tool transfers ‘less than 40MB’ of data, but on faster connection it may transfer more.
News about Google’s tool comes a month after Netflix launched its tool that allows users to check the internet speed by tying fast.com in the URL and wait for a moment to complete the test. Microsoft’s Bing also has a similar feature built into its search results. On searching ‘internet speed test’ or ‘speed test,’ the first result shows a tool with a meter, IP address and start button to being the test. Once completed, the results show up right there.
