Yes, it indeed seems to had been catering to specific apps. They called it Airtel Live. It all seems to had been part of the Airtel Live Re 1 offers (Remember the Airtel 129 store? Same as Airtel Live, but this one was also accessible on feature phones via USSD Codes).
The Re 1 email in question here, seems to had been Yahoo! Mail (Facebook & Yahoo! are shown after the 0:42 second mark in the video you had embedded to your post). However, I am not aware if Yahoo! had a separate app at the time (which included email), or if the Re 1 per day internet was limited to yahoo.com on any mobile web browser.

It's nothing but access to internet connection to send email. That internet connection will give you few MBs. Otherwise you can access to internet from main balance too.
Those were so hard days that can't imagine how we will survive today if Jio wouldn't introduced.
