Rishabh Pant replaces Gambhir as Delhi captain

Gautam Gambhir has been removed as captain of the Delhi team for the upcoming Vijay Hazare trophy. In a surprise move, the reins have been handed over to the 19-year old Rishabh Pant.

Pant recently made his debut for India in the third T20I against England but has been around in the domestic circuit for only two seasons. The Delhi team is likely to feature a host of other senior players such as Ashish Nehra, Gambhir himself and Unmukt Chand. However, the selectors - Atul Wassan, Nikhil Chopra, Robin Singh - have punted on Pant instead.

"Frankly Vijay Hazare is the last tournament of the season and this was an ideal opportunity for us to see who is the best candidate to lead the state side. We were not finding anyone all these years who could replace Gautam," said Nikhil Chopra to PTI on the decision.

"The Hazare Trophy gives us opportunity to test Rishabh's captaincy skills and with Gautam and other seniors around, he will get ample guidance from Gautam. Obviously Atul (Wassan) has spoken to Gautam and he has been taken into confidence," said Chopra.

Joe Root is understood to have been interviewed by England's Director of Cricket Andrew Strauss on Thursday for the job of England Test captain.

Earlier this week, Strauss confirmed that a likely announcement on Alastair Cook's successor will be made before the end of next week and Yorkshire's 26 year-old Root is almost certain to be named as captain with Ben Stokes thought close to being named as his deputy.

The Durham all-rounder Stokes has also met with Strauss this week as did Stuart Broad, who gave his thoughts on how England can improve in the Test arena after some middling results over the past six months. It is not thought that Broad is in the running for a formal leadership role.
