Malinga's knee problem a “substantial injury”
Lasith Malinga’s participation in Sri Lanka’s upcoming series against England and Australia has been put in doubt after the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) medical team confirmed that his knee injury was more serious than initially thought.
Malinga was ruled out of the Indian Premier League on Monday, where he was to turn out for Mumbai Indians, and went back to Sri Lanka to meet an SLC panel of doctors, who have now confirmed a “substantial injury” to his left knee.
Malinga doesn’t have to undergo surgery, with rest and periodic reassessment the prescribed treatment.
It was unclear how long Malinga, 32, would be confined to the sidelines.
“Malinga is suffering from a stress reaction in the knee,” said Dr Harindu Wijesinghe, the SLC medical committee chairman, on Friday (April 22). “This has been caused by pressure being put on the knee. There is a chance that a stress reaction could worsen to a stress fracture, at which point he would need surgery.
“A few doctors have been advising Malinga, and we feel that he needs to rest his knee, while undergoing physiotherapy and strengthening.”
The injury took place when, during a tour of the West Indies, Malinga suffered a bone bruise to his left knee. He has since played only one competitive game, a Twenty20 International against the UAE in February's Asia Cup where he returned 4 for 26.
The injury forced him to step down from the captaincy prior to the World Twenty20, with Angelo Mathews taking charge, and Malinga played no part in the tournament. And though he joined up with the Mumbai squad last week, he was not in any shape to take the field.
Malinga has a long history of injury problems and has played only limited-overs cricket since giving up Test cricket in August 2010.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and a T20I in England in June and July, before Australia visit for a full series.
