Malinga's knee problem a “substantial injury”

Lasith Malinga’s participation in Sri Lanka’s upcoming series against England and Australia has been put in doubt after the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) medical team confirmed that his knee injury was more serious than initially thought.

Malinga was ruled out of the Indian Premier League on Monday, where he was to turn out for Mumbai Indians, and went back to Sri Lanka to meet an SLC panel of doctors, who have now confirmed a “substantial injury” to his left knee.

Malinga doesn’t have to undergo surgery, with rest and periodic reassessment the prescribed treatment.

It was unclear how long Malinga, 32, would be confined to the sidelines.

“Malinga is suffering from a stress reaction in the knee,” said Dr Harindu Wijesinghe, the SLC medical committee chairman, on Friday (April 22). “This has been caused by pressure being put on the knee. There is a chance that a stress reaction could worsen to a stress fracture, at which point he would need surgery.

“A few doctors have been advising Malinga, and we feel that he needs to rest his knee, while undergoing physiotherapy and strengthening.”

The injury took place when, during a tour of the West Indies, Malinga suffered a bone bruise to his left knee. He has since played only one competitive game, a Twenty20 International against the UAE in February's Asia Cup where he returned 4 for 26.

The injury forced him to step down from the captaincy prior to the World Twenty20, with Angelo Mathews taking charge, and Malinga played no part in the tournament. And though he joined up with the Mumbai squad last week, he was not in any shape to take the field.

Malinga has a long history of injury problems and has played only limited-overs cricket since giving up Test cricket in August 2010.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and a T20I in England in June and July, before Australia visit for a full series.

Cricket Australia does a U-turn, says won’t prevent Chris Gayle from playing Big Bash

Cricket Australia says it will not take any steps to prevent West Indian batsman Chris Gayle playing in its Big Bash Twenty20 league next season.

In what appears to be a reversal of position, chief executive James Sutherland told News Corp. Saturday that Cricket Australia would not involve itself in a recruitment issue unless it involved a player implicated in match-fixing.

Gayle’s tenure with the Melbourne Renegades in last year’s BBL was tainted when he made what was interpreted as a sexist comment to a female television reporter. During a sideline interview he invited reporter Mel McLaughlin for a drink, then said “don’t blush baby” when she showed embarrassment.

Gayle was fined $10,000 for the comments which Sutherland described as “completely inappropriate” and “bordering on harassment.”
On Saturday, Sutherland said it was not Cricket Australia’s role to exclude players from the Big Bash League.

“No matter what anyone at Cricket Australia thought at management level, board level, I think you’re on a slippery slope if you start making judgments on players who could or shouldn’t be playing in the Big Bash League or in our domestic competitions,” Sutherland said.

“Because, when does that ever end? My view is unless there’s a very, very strong reason along the lines of anti-corruption, then it’s difficult for us to be making those judgments.

“I’m not saying that it wouldn’t happen but my judgment is that it’s not appropriate. It’s about the teams themselves to make the calls.”

Younis Khan triggers controversy, returns home midway from Pakistan Cup

Senior batsman Younis Khan has triggered another controversy in Pakistan cricket by returning home midway from the ongoing Pakistan Cup one-day tournament in Faisalabad.
A reliable source told PTI that Younis had left the tournament after match referee Aziz Rehman fined and summoned him for a disciplinary hearing. He was captaining the Khyber Pakhtunkhawa outfit.

“Younis left because he felt his reputation was being tarnished at this stage of his career and this was not acceptable to him,” the source said.
“Younis was not happy with the standard of umpiring and when the referee summoned him for a disciplinary hearing over some remarks he had made to fourth umpire Rashid Riaz after Friday’s match (which KPK won) and he decided to leave the tournament in protest,” another source confirmed.

The manager of the KPK team, Mukhtar Hussain, confirmed that Younis had left for home and Test batsman Ahmed Shehzad would now lead the team in the prestigious competition being televised live and being played under lights.

“Younis first had a run-in with umpire Shozab during the match against Federal Areas Islamabad which Misbah ul Haq was leading,” the source said.

“In that match one appeal was turned down against Misbah and Younis was also not happy with the general standard of umpiring and when he asked the umpire why he didn’t give Misbah out he got a funny reply,” the source said.
Younis, after the match which KPK lost narrowly, said at the prize distribution ceremony if umpiring had been good his team would have won the match.

“The matter heated up when during the toss for the KPK game against Sindh on Friday the match referee requested Younis to go easy on the umpires. Younis, in a discussion with the fourth umpire later, gave him a piece of his mind and told him what needed to be done to improve the umpiring standards,” the source said.
He said the fourth umpire than went and complained to the match referee that Younis had offended him and violated the code of conduct.

“The referee summoned Younis for a hearing which the senior player refused to attend after which the referee fined him 50 percent of his match fees.”
