Ganguly on MCC World Cricket Committe
Sourav Ganguly will become only the third Indian after Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, his former teammates, to be inducted into the Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) World Cricket Committee (WCC) later this year.
Ganguly, one of India’s most successful Test captains, confirmed to Wisden India on Monday (June 8) that he had accepted an invitation from Mike Brearley, the WCC chairman, to be a part of the prestigious panel.
Established in 2006, the committee, which also consists of some of Ganguly’s contemporaries such as Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss, Steve Waugh and Kumar Sangakkara, meets twice a year to discuss issues and developments of the game.
In recent times, the committee has been vocal about the implementation of the Decision Review System (DRS), which came under the spotlight after a number of controversial decisions during the Ashes series in England in 2013. At the meeting last year, the committee felt a further benefit from universal use would be the ownership of the whole process by International Cricket Council rather than by television companies.
MCC, which was founded in 1787, will celebrate the bicentenary of Lord’s on July 5, when a Sachin Tendulkar-led MCC XI will play Rest of the World XI, captained by Shane Warne in a 50-over match. The fixture will also feature the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Adam Gilchrist, Brian Lara and Muttiah Muralitharan.
MCC was founded in 1787 and its first Code of Laws, the rules that govern cricket, was adopted in May 1788. The club continues to own the Laws, and act as the guardian of the Spirit of Cricket, today.
David Morgan, the former ICC president, will take over from Mike Gatting, the former England captain, as the MCC chief on October 1, 2014.
The current panel comprises Mike Brearley (chairman), Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss and Charlotte Edwards (England), Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly (India), Tim May, Steve Waugh and Rod Marsh (Australia), Shaun Pollock and Dave Richardson (South Africa), Jimmy Adams and Steve Bucknor (West Indies), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) and Majid Khan (Pakistan).
