'Future of telecom industry is secure'

Inaugurating the eighth National Telecom Seminar with the theme ' Telefocus' here this week, Akhil Gupta, Deputy CEO and MD, Bharti Enterprises, said that he believed that the future of the Indian telecom industry was secure and bright, while admitting that it was facing some problems.

Speaking at the Amity Institute of Telecom Technology and Management, Gupta said the problems have been created by the industry itself as also by the regulatory authority, the government, the courts of justice etc.

He said that millions of dollars are spent every year on new technology, research and equipment with the purpose of changing everything into next generation technology, and everyone involved with the industry should take steps to avoid problems that were afflicting it currently.

He predicted that before the end of the decade, 3G technology would replace everything and 2G technology would be sidelined.

He also said that the use of optic fibers is yet to become common. There are over a billion internet users in India, and efforts are being made to spread its usage in rural areas as well, he added.

On the occasion, several awards were presented to corporate heads, such as Adrian Topp (Director Network, Colt India), Kwanbena Smith (Executive Chairman - ORUM Energy from Nigeria) and Prem Behl (Founder-Exhibition India).

The Top Telecom Service provider award was given to Bharti Airtel. Indus Towers and Viom Networks were awarded the Green Company of the year gong, while Ericsson India Ltd was given the Rop Broadband Infrastructure award.

The telecom industry is strong and resilient and will continue to grow stronger. The prospective workforce for this industry need to tap not only within the boundaries of our country but international networks as well, averred Gupta told Amity students.

The conference was attended by several academicians, technocrats, industry heads of the telecom sector and hundreds of students.
