HYDERABAD: As Bitumen Roads (BT) are getting damaged at regular intervals more particularly at water logging points for the first time, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to replace BT with concrete paver blocks.
The corporation has proposed to lay the concrete paver blocks at about 45 water stagnation points at a cost of around `1.4 crore, GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy told Express
"We have found that bitumen roads are getting damaged at water stagnation points as it gets loosened leading to road damages and making the roads unmotorable
Hence, we have decided to replace BT roads with concrete paver blocks" he explained
Interlocking segmental paving is said to be a durable alternate method as compared to rigid concrete paving or flexible asphalt paving
Concrete blocks have durability and wearing resistance and are unaffected by rains, GHMC officials said
GHMC has also proposed to lay pavements with a mix of loose concrete so they can be easily cut and replaced if any changes need to be made in the underground utility cables and pipelines. The road will be laid in a sloping manner so that rains can enter storm water drains to avoid flooding during rainy season, officials added
