The India-England Test series gets underway with the first Test in Rajkot on November 9. As a build-up, we look back at England’s last five visits to India. In our first part, we recap England’s tour of India in 1992-1993. Three Tests were played during this series, and India blanked England 3-0.
1 st Test at Eden Gardens: The first match of the series was played from January 29-February 2, 1993. India won the toss and batted first. Skipper Mohammad Azharuddin led from the front with 182 from 197 balls. Sachin Tendulkar chipped in with 50 as India put up 371. In response, India bowled England out for 163. The Indian spin trio of Anil Kumble, Venkatapathy Raju and Rajesh Chauhan claimed three wickets apiece. Made to follow on, England did better by posting 286 on the board. Mike Gatting made 81 and Alec Stewart 49. Kumble and Raju again claimed three scalps apiece. India were chasing 82 to win, and got there with eight wickets in hand.
2 nd Test at Chepauk: The second Test was held at MA Chidambaram Stadium from February 11 to 15. India again won the toss, and decided to bat first. This time, they posted a massive 560 for 6 on the board. Sachin Tendulkar starred with an impressive 165. Opener Navjot Sidhu also got a hundred, making 106. Vinod Kambli, Pravin Amre and Kapil Dev all chipped in with half-centuries. In reply, England only made 286. Neil Fairbrother top-scored with 83, Alec Stewart made 74 and Graeme Hick 64. Raju and Chauhan picked up four and three wickets respectively. England, made to follow-on, were bowled for 252, despite a hundred from Chris Lewis. At the top, Robin Smith made 56. Kumble ran through the attack with 6 for 64.
3 rd Test at Mumbai:The third and final Test of the series was played at Wankhede Stadium from February 19-23. This time, England won the toss and chose to bat. Hick’s splendid 178 led England to a first-innings score of 347. Lewis was the next top-scorer with 49. Kapil Dev and Kumble claimed three wickets each for India. India responded with a mammoth 591. Vinod Kambli led the way with an unforgettable 224 from 411 balls. There were some very good support acts from Sidhu (79), Tendulkar (78) and Amre (57). Chasing a big first-innings deficit, England folded up for 229 in their second innings. Smith and Gatting made 60s each while Hick chipped in with 47. Kumble claimed four wickets and Prabhakar three as India won by an innings and 15 runs.

In our second part, we recap England’s tour of India in 2001/02. Three Tests were played during this series, and while England competed well, they still ended up losing 1-0.
1 st Test at Mohali: The opening Test of the series was played from December 3-6 at Mohali. India won the toss and chose to field. After inserting England in, India bowled the visitors for 238. Skipper Nasser Hussain top-scored for England with 85 while Marcus Trescothick made 66. The lower-order however collapsed. Harbhajan Singh claimed 5 for 51 for India while Anil Kumble and debutant Tinu Yohannan picked up two wickets each.
India responded with an impressive 469. Wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta was the surprise success story with 100. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar chipped in with 80s each. Richard Dawson claimed 4 for 134 for England while Matthew Hoggard claimed three scalps. England faltered again in the second innings, and were rolled over for 255. Kumble starred this time with 6 for 81. Graham Thorpe top-scored for England with 62. Chasing five, India got home by 10 wickets.
2 nd Test at Ahmedabad: The second Test was played at Motera from December 11-December 15. England won the toss, and batted first. They did well to finish with 407. Craig White starred with a brilliant 121. Trescothick made 99 while Mark Butcher chipped in with 51. For India, Kumble claimed 7 for 115. Ashley Giles then picked up five scalps as the Englishmen held India to 291. Tendulkar chipped in with 103 while VVS Laxman contributed 75. Hoggard and Flintoff picked up two wickets each.
England responded with 257 in their second innings, built around Butcher’s 92 while Hussain made 50. Harbhajan this time claimed 5 for 71. Set 374 to win, India held on to a draw, making 198 for 3. Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta made fifties each.
3 rd Test at Bangalore: The final Test was played at Chinnaswamy Stadium from December 19 to 23. England again won the toss and batted first. They made 336. Michael Vaughan was dismissed for 64 handled the ball, Mark Ramprakash made 58 while Hussain and Foster made 40s each. Javagal Srinath claimed 4 wickets for India and Sarandeep Singh three. India were disappointing in response, being all-out for 238. Tendulkar’s laboured 90 was the key. He batted for 198 balls. Lower down the order, Virender Sehwag made a quick 66. Hoggard and Flintoff picked up four scalps each.
England ended day four on 33 for no loss, but there was no play on day five, and the match ended in a dull draw. India took the three-match series 1-0. Flintoff was the man of the match, and Tendulkar man of series.

Alastair Cook made 60 and Andrew Flintoff 43. Sreesanth claimed four wickets and Irfan Pathan three. India were held to 323 in return. Mohammad Kaif made 91, and Wasim Jaffer 81. Lower down the order, Anil Kumble contributed 58. Matthew Hoggard starred with 6 for 57.
England batted excellently in the second innings, finishing on 297 for 3. Cook made his famous unbeaten century on debut, remaining not out on 104 while Kevin Pietersen smashed a quick 87. Chasing 368, the match ended in a draw as India made 260 for 6. Jaffer batted well again, notching up a hundred, and Dravid 71. Hoggard was the man of the match.
2nd Test: The next Test of the series was played at Mohali from March 9-13. England won the toss and batted first. They managed only 300. Flintoff made 70, Pietersen 64 and Geraint Jones 52. Kumble claimed 5 for 76 for India while Munaf Patel picked up three scalps. England did well to restrict India to 388. Dravid made 95, and lower down the order, Irfan Pathan chipped in with 52. Flintoff starred with four scalps for England.
In the second innings, England were cleaned up for merely 181. Ian Bell and Flintoff made 50s each, but the rest struggled. Munaf and Kumble starred again with four wickets each. India were chasing only 144 to win the Test, and did so easily thanks to Sehwag who smashed unbeaten 76. Kumble was named man of the match.
3rd Test: The final Test of the series was played at Mumbai from March 18-22. India won the toss and decided the insert the opposition in. England put up an impressive 400 on the board. Andrew Strauss was brilliant with 128 while debutant Owais Shah surprised with a fluent 88. Down the order, Flintoff made 50. Sreesanth picked up four wickets and Harbhajan three. James Anderson's four-for kept India down to 279. MS Dhoni top-scored with 64 while Dravid made 52.
England were cleaned up for 191 in their second innings, with Flintoff's 50 being the only score of note. Kumble once again starred with four wickets. Chasing a total 313, India were rolled over for 100. Shaun Udal was the surprise star was 4 for 14 while Flintoff claimed 3 for 14. The all-rounder was the man of the match as well as the series.

In our fourth part, we recap England’s tour of India in 2008/09. Two tests were played during this series, and India won the series 1-0 against the backdrop of the Mumbai terror attacks.
1st Test: The opening Test was played at Chennai from December 11-15, 2008. England won the toss and chose to bat first. They put up 316 on the board. Opener Andrew Strauss made 123 while Cook and Matt Prior chipped in with 50s each. Harbhajan and Amit Mishra claimed three wickets each. England were rolled over for 241 in return; Dhoni was the only one to cross fifty. For England, Flintoff and Panesar claimed three wickets each.
England raked up 311 in their second innings, Cook and Collingwood both made 108 each. For India, both Zaheer and Ishant claimed three wickets. India had to chase an improbable 387 to win the Test. But, India batted brilliantly to claim the Test. Sehwag smashed 83 from 68, Tendulkar made an unbeaten 103, Yuvraj Singh was unbeaten on 85 while Gautam Gambhir made 66.
