FIFA World Cup: Every Player to be Tested for Drugs

drugs_300.jpg

Laussane, Switzerland: FIFA is on an ambitious mission to make sure that for the first time every player who takes part in the World Cup has a drug test and carries a 'biological passport'.

Football's governing body wants to impose the passport -- already used in cycling and athletics -- that will follow a player throughout his career, giving details of blood and urine tests.

Since March, a team of FIFA doctors and nurses have been carrying out random blood and urine tests at internationals and team training camps.

Lionel Messi's Argentina and France were visited last week at their camps to prepare for the tournament, according to media reports.

Brazilian star Neymar, Italian captain Gianluigi Buffon and Spain's Andres Iniesta were among those who gave samples at last year's Confederations Cup.

Chelsea, Barcelona, Santos and Monterrey stars were tested during international club competitions over the past 18 months.

Players can expect a tap on the shoulder right from the first matches of the World Cup which starts June 12.

"We can test anybody, anytime, anywhere, any amount of times," said Jiri Dvorak, FIFA's chief medical officer in a recent interview.

So far nothing alarming has turned up, according to Dvorak. "The hematological parameters are normal," he said.

FIFA is building up a biological passport on all players.

It has taken at least two test samples from most players while some have given up to four.

So far teams have made the doping investigators welcome. "They understand what we are doing and they consider that kind of examination as part of their professional life," said Dvorak.

The FIFA tests look for discrepancies in haemoglobins and red cells that could indicate EPO doping or other banned efforts to boost endurance. These kinds of tests are already used in cycling and athletics.

Football's governing body also checks hormone levels and for anabolic steroids in the urine.

The drug testing logistics in Brazil face difficulties, Dvorak acknowledged.

There is no international standard laboratory in Brazil. The World Anti-Doping Agency withdrew its accreditation for the only facility in Rio de Janeiro last year.

FIFA will be sending its samples to a laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, which will add $250,000 (180,000 euros) to the doping clampdown costs.

And as blood samples must be analysed within 36 hours of being drawn, it will be a race against time to get samples from far-flung World Cup cities such as Manaus in the Amazon and Fortaleza.

"It is a challenge," acknowledged Dvorak.

But transport from stadiums has already been tested.

"There are a few games that are difficult. But the majority of the samples will arrive at the laboratory between 24 and 48 hours," said Dvorak. The Lausanne laboratory will work 24 hours a day during the World Cup, he added.

"Some of the matches are critical, the critical matches we will look at very carefully," the medical chief said.

Football has had relatively few declared cases of performance-enhancing doping.

Argentine star Diego Maradona was sent home from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for the stimulant ephedrine.

Last year there were cases involving internationals from Jamaica, Peru and Tahiti. But FIFA believes the smaller football nations are less aware of the risks involved.

Cannabis and cocaine have made up the majority of drug failures in football in recent years, according to FIFA.com, the world body's website.

FIFA's biological passport could spread further than the World Cup though.

A scientific review of the FIFA campaign will be published at the end of the year. If it backs the drug testing, the world body may press the major leagues to start their own regimes.

BBC World Cup Ultra-HD trials

BBC Research and Development is to trial Ultra-HD broadcasts during this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The closed trials will cover all of the three World Cup matches being produced in Ultra-HD by FIFA TV from the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro – one from the last 16, a quarter-final and the final – marking the first time live Ultra-HD coverage will have been delivered simultaneously over DTT and IP technologies ‘to the home’.

The live Ultra-HD streams will be transported from Brazil by satellite to the UK where they will be decoded and distributed, via existing broadcast and super-fast broadband infrastructure, to a number of compatible consumer Ultra-HD TV sets in selected R&D facilities.

The initiative forms part of a series of closed trials, in which BBC R&D will work closely with strategic research partner, Arqiva, major consumer electronics vendors and technology providers to explore the delivery of live Ultra-HD content over broadcast and broadband networks.

The aim is to better understand the latest Ultra-HD distribution technologies and standards in a live outside broadcast, helping to inform future development, best practices and, ultimately, to ensure any future Ultra-HD TV services can make a real impact when they launch. This can be broken down into three key areas of research:

1. A future hybrid broadcasting model

Benefits of traditional broadcasting include its universality and efficiency, distributing an event or programme once, to a large number of people across wide areas. Broadband delivers content to individual people or devices, offering greater flexibility and individuality. BBC R&D wants to explore a world where traditional means of distribution and IP technologies complement each other, taking advantage of their respective strengths to bring audiences the content of the future.

2. Delivering Ultra-HD TV efficiently

The challenge of distributing Ultra-HD TV to the home is compatibility with existing broadcast and broadband distribution capacities. This trial will examine the use of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) for distribution over both DTT and over the top IP networks.

3. Delivering high quality Ultra-HD TV

Adaptive bitrate technology is an important tool for providing a consistent quality of service over IP networks. It allows an individual’s device to automatically select the best available picture quality according to the network bandwidth available at any given time. These trials will test the use of MPEG-DASH adaptive bitrate for high quality video delivery over IP networks.

Much of the research can also be applied to existing services and technology to provide near-term benefits to the BBC and the wider industry. It will also help to inform BBC R&D’s contributions to the international standardisation of Ultra-HDTV, and its ongoing work exploring video and audio technologies that may be relevant to future Ultra-HD enhancements.

Matthew Postgate, Controller, BBC R&D, said that BBC R&D had an outstanding track record as a catalyst for bringing the industry together and delivering the future of television to audiences. “These trials are an excellent example of that tradition as a major technical achievement, such as distributing Ultra-HD TV over DTT and IP simultaneously from Rio, can only be made possible by close collaboration with a range of organisations. The trials will prove hugely valuable in furthering our understanding of Ultra-HD technology, and potential distribution models for the future, as well providing real benefits for licence fee payers in the near-term.”

Steve Holebrook, Managing Director of Terrestrial Broadcast for Arqiva, said that by trialling Ultra High Definition with the BBC, Arqiva could demonstrate how future Ultra-HD live events could be delivered to millions of UK homes via the leading television platform – DTT. “This is the first over-air demonstration of live Ultra-HD in the UK and uses new High Efficiency Transmitters and HEVC coding technology. We are delighted to demonstrate the future potential of the DTT platform using the benefits of the DVB-T2 standard which we first deployed in 2009 as a world first.”

Google Adds FIFA World Cup Brazil Football Stadiums to Street View

brazil640google.jpg

The free online mapping service added "Street View" imagery of all 12 World Cup stadiums along with scenes captured on roads painted in festive tribute to the major global sporting event.

"Whether you're watching the games from the comfort of your couch or packing your bags for Brazil, Google Maps is your ticket to the World Cup," Street View program manager Deanna Yick said in a blog post.

"And if you're lucky enough to have a physical ticket to Brazil, don't forget to pack Google Maps for mobile."

Google mapping applications for smartphones or tablet computers include tools for finding the most efficient ways to get to games using buses or trains in host cities.

The service also features maps of the insides of stadiums, airports, malls and other spots soccer fans may want to explore, according to Yick.

Images from other potential locations of interest, such as Iguacu National Park and St. Michael of the Missions, were also added to Google Maps.

Google in April introduced a 'time travel' mode for Street View. Street View snapshots now include the option to see what neighbourhoods and landmarks looked like at different periods in the last seven years, as Google Inc. has been dispatching camera-toting cars to take street-level pictures for its maps.

The search giant said it intends to keep adding pictures to the digital time capsules as its photo-taking cars continue to cruise the same streets gathering updates.

FIFA World Cup: France Rule Out Injured Franck Ribery

ribery640_francewc.jpg

Paris:
Star winger Franck Ribery was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup on Friday dealing a huge blow to France's hopes of lifting the trophy in Brazil.

The 31-year-old Bayern Munich forward's failure to recover from a nagging back injury was confirmed by coach Didier Deschamps at a press conference.

Deschamps announced that midfielder Clement Grenier would also miss the World Cup because of a thigh injury he suffered in the 1-1 draw with Paraguay last Sunday.

Deschamps called up Montpellier attacking midfielder Remy Cabella and Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin as replacements.

Germany's Marco Reus Set to Miss FIFA World Cup After Ankle Tear

Mianz: Germany winger Marco Reus is set to miss the World Cup after suffering a partially torn ankle ligament in Friday's 6-1 friendly win over Armenia.

The 25-year-old was rushed to hospital after twisting his left ankle just before the half-time break in Mainz and a scan revealed the extent of the injury.

The German Football Association (DFB) have said a decision will be made as to whether the Borussia Dortmund star flies to Brazil with the squad, who leave at 22:00 local time from Frankfurt for their camp at Porto Seguro on Saturday.

With seven goals in 21 appearances for Germany, Reus' withdrawal would be a bitter blow for the Dortmund winger.

He has been in good form this season and is central to head coach Joachim Loew's brand of attacking football.

"Marco has been in great form and a bad injury would be very bitter," said Germany captain Philipp Lahm before the diagnosis.

Germany open their Group G campaign against Portugal in Salvador on June 16 and also face Ghana and the USA in the first round.

Greece's Departure for FIFA World Cup Delayed

New Jersey:
Greece's departure for its World Cup training base in Brazil has been delayed after its flight was cancelled in the United States.

The Greek Football Association says "due to a technical problem of the navigation system of the airplane the flight of the national team from New Jersey to Aracaju (Brazil) was cancelled."

Greece was due to leave Newark for Brazil early Saturday morning, shortly after beating Bolivia 2-1 in a World Cup warm-up friendly Friday night at New Jersey's Red Bull Arena.

Come June 12, and Punekars will glued to the television sets at their homes, workplaces, restaurants and clubs to witness the biggest sporting carnival- the 2014 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) football World Cup. Right from the live screenings, official merchandise to tempting drinks, the city has a lot to offer for excited football fans across the city.

Action for all

To cater the needs of the diverse football fans spread across the city, the lounges in Pune have come up with a variety of offers. For the collegians operating on tight budgets to the affluent population of the city, who can spend on extravagant 'screenings' in five stars, the city lounges have something to offer everybody. The city restaurants will serve football enthusiasts across the city between a budget of Rs 200 and Rs 2,000.

The Curly's Sports Cafe in the Camp area is offering the screenings from a nominal rate of Rs. 200 for its visitors.

"Apart from the screenings, we have a FIFA tournament gaming on PS3 and PS4 for our customers. We don't serve drinks but for Rs. 200, the customers will get a chance to watch the match and enjoy the food here," said one of the partners of the Cafe, Prashant Thakkar.

Exciting offers

Football fans are in for some treat in restaurants like Mundhwa's Pesto Pesto, which during the happy hours between one and eight pm, has a one-on-one offer on beers and drinks all through the World Cup season. Some restaurants will reward the supporters of the team that scores a goal. So if you want to get lucky, make sure you are wearing your team's jersey while watching at these restaurants. At the Toss Sports Lounge, the supporters will be given exciting goodies if their team wins.

Special drinks, food and decor

The Toss Sports Lounge and Pesto Pesto will also serve one popular dish of each country playing in the World Cup this year. They have come up with several new World Cup special drinks.

"As the World Cup is being held in Brazil, we wanted to come up with some drink that defines this country. The drink consists rum, sugar sticks, mint, lemon and takasa," informed Mandar Desphande, operational director of Pesto Pesto.

To make the live screenings more exciting, some of the restaurants waiters will don the jersey's of teams playing the WC.

"We have come up with the idea where waiters serving in our bar will be dressed like Brazilian footballers," said Ramesh Khole, Proprietor, Toons, Camp. Pesto Pesto will put up the flags and jerseys of the teams on their walls.

Merchandise being sold like hot cakes

While jerseys of England, Spain and Argentina are in much demand, the Dutch team supporter, Shardul Garbhe and his group of friends have pre-ordered jerseys to support their team.

"We are a group of seven, who regularly play football at the Hut Fut Ground and other grounds across the city. We had pre-ordered jerseys of the Netherlands as we want to see them lift the title," said Garbhe.

"We are running out of stocks of England and Germany t-shirts. We have come up with legend series for players like Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho. People in Pune are buying them in stocks," informed Siddharth Keskar of Eetee clothing.

City enthusiasts speak

This year, I am really surprised to see the enthusiasm of the city's football fans. Right from the idea of screening the matches live to all the fancy merchandise, the city seems ready for the World Cup. I have been supporting Spain since the beginning. It has always been a ritual for me wear Spain's jersey every time I watch their match. So, I will be doing that this year too. With the timings being an issue, I will watch some of the matches at my home and the rest at a live screening centre with my friends.
-Ajinkya Mandhare, Student

I'm really impressed with the way the city is all decked up for the World Cup. I've always supported Germany and I feel that they will win the title this year. I've brought their original jersey and will be wearing it for all the matches when Germany will be playing. Also, I will be watching the matches with my friends at the Toss Sports Bar. Seeing the spirit of city, I'm just so excited for the World Cup to kick off.
-Siddharth Painoli, HR

I am a little superstitions when it comes to football. This year, I will make sure not to get up from my seat while Belgium is playing. The team tends to lose when I switch places. Unfortunately, I did not find any showroom which sold the original jersey of Belgium. However, with some more days to go for the World Cup, I am hoping to find the jersey online. With the matches being telecast at odd timings, I will watching it at my place with my football enthusiastic friends.
-Kenneth de Souza, Marketing Manager

This year, I will be watching all the matches to see how are the teams are playing. As of now, I want Brazil to win the title because they are a very good team. I heard that Pesto Pesto is coming up a special cocktail for the World Cup. I would love to watch the match there and the new cocktail will be an icing on the cake.
-Samiha Dabholkar, Law Student

I like the idea where some of the sports bar in Pune let you place a bet where you get a free drink if your team wins. Spain this year has all of my favourite players; hence I place my bet on this team. The timing is an issue though. Watching the matches at a sports bar is great experience, as that's where all the energy lies. I will mostly be watching the 9.30pm matches at Toons or Pesto Pesto.
-Sherwin Xavier, Proprietor

I can't wait for the World Cup to begin. I'm supporting Portugal and I think Ronaldo will finally deliver in Brazil. I haven't bought any merchandise yet but I'm planning to buy their jersey and wear it when Portugal is playing. I'll watch the big game that is against Germany with friend at a sports bar.

Germany's Marco Reus Ruled Out, Shkodran Mustafi to Replace Him

marcoreus300.jpg

The German Football Federation said that Marco Reus suffered a partial ligament tear in his left ankle in the match on Friday and will miss six to seven weeks before he can resume training again.

Berlin: Germany attacking midfielder Marco Reus was ruled out of the World Cup on Saturday with an ankle injury sustained in a 6-1 friendly win over Armenia.

The German Football Federation said that Reus suffered a partial ligament tear in his left ankle in the match on Friday and will miss six to seven weeks before he can resume training again.

"For him and for us this is extremely regrettable," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "Marco was in excellent form; he made an outstanding impression in the training camp and in both (friendly) matches against Cameroon and Armenia. He exuded enthusiasm for the game. He played a central role in our planning for Brazil."

The 25-year-old Reus was one of the few German players to have impressed consistently coming into the World Cup.

"A dream is ended from one second to the other. But I have to look forward now, approach my recovery professionally, because then I have to go again. I'll come back even stronger than before," Reus was quoted as saying on the website of his club, Borussia Dortmund.

"I send my best wishes to the team (and hope) that they can also achieve our aim without me."

Shkodran Mustafi was called up as a late replacement for the Dortmund player. The 22-year-old Sampdoria defender was part of Germany's 30-man preliminary squad and took part in the training camp in northern Italy

"It's not about replacing Marco Reus directly," Loew said. "We have a lot of quality for the position behind the forward. Here we have in Lukas Podolski, Andre Schuerrle, Mario Goetze, Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and Toni Kroos enough options. So we decided for another option in defense."

Mustafi told the dpa news agency that Loew had phoned him as he was on his way home.

"I'm very sorry for Marco, but of course I'm happy that I can be there," Mustafi said.

FIFA World Cup: 'Goal-Line Technology Welcome Step'

footballgeneric300_goal-line.jpg

Lagos: FIFA instructor Adegboye Onigbinde has described the introduction of goal-line at the 2014 FIFA World Cup as a welcome development.

Nigeria-born Onigbinde, former head coach of the Super Eagles, told reporters here Saturday that the introduction of the technology would clear all doubts about shoddy goals.

For the first time at a World Cup, officials will be assisted by goal-line technology.

The 2010 World Cup was a catalyst for the decision to adopt the technology after England was wrongly denied a goal in their round 16 tie against Germany, when Frank Lampard's goal was disallowed against Germany.

According to Onigbinde, there have been test runs in some FIFA competitions, including the 2013 Confederation Cup.

The new technology will give confidence to all participants, he said, adding it will clear all doubts and it will also reduce controversies.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off June 12 and ends July 13.
